Lila (legeartis) | 14 comments I'm reading Finding Claire Fletcher by Lisa Regan ... It's new to me author. So far so good.

Paige | 81 comments De - yes I love the " Prey" Series also. He was the first "thriller" author I read. John Sanford is a good author.

Paige and Deb I agree. When I started the Prey series I was hooked immediately. It's been a couple of years since I read Sandford but he's excellent.

Seeley James (seeleyjames) I wrote a review of Mad River a while back. I believe what keeps Sandford's series (Flowers or Davenport) going where other series become the same ol' thing is that he concentrates on the bad guys. Each one is unique and realistic.

I would agree with this. I like how some of the bad guys are really evil & scary and how some are seemingly "normal" people who do bad things. He really mixes it up.

I also enjoying knowing who the bad guys are throughout the book and waiting to see how they will finally cross paths with Lucas or Virgil.

message 806: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 139 comments I've only read one Sandford book, but really enjoyed it. Owen Laukkanen has written a couple of books that remind me a lot of Sandford. Also set in Minnesota and also spending a lot of time getting to know the bad guys, who are usually regular folk who cross the line and keep drifting further and further away.

Jannene | 775 comments I'm reading Bones to Ashes (Temperance Brennan, #10) by Kathy Reichs and Hotwire (Maggie O'Dell, #9) by Alex Kava .

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I finished The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz, a humorous mystery about a family run private detective agency. Izzy Spellman and her kooky family run surveillance, bugging, and info collection for their job AND on each other. Pretty fun.

Thanks for the recommendation... I've added him to my list. I do enjoy books set in Minnesota, I've started listening to the Cork O'Conner series by William Kent Krueger and while they aren't as good as Sandford's books they are easy listening while I'm doing other things.

message 810: by Bill (new)

Bill I'm about a fifth of the way through Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot by George Eliot and well into my third Travis McGee mystery, Purple Place for Dying by John D. MacDonald . I didn't think the second was quite as good as the first, but I liked the characters and how easily John D. MacDonald built the tension and developed relationships. Enjoying my foray into the world of Travis McGee very much.

Is this the type of series you have to read in order?

message 812: by Barbara (last edited Sep 11, 2013 06:44PM) (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I'm reading Her Last Breath by Linda Castillo. In this book police chief Kate Burkholder (formerly Amish) investigates a hit and run that killed an Amish man and two of his three kids.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments Read Simon Said by Sarah R. Shaber. I wasn't really expecting to like it very much. I was surprised. It kept me up all night last night.

Even though I was pretty sure who the killer was. On to Snipe Hunt. I'll at least try #2 in the series.

I just finished Cover Story by Gerry Boyle. I thought it was really good. It follows former New York Times reporter Jack McMorrow from Maine, where he now resides, back to NYC and he is quickly caught up in a murder investigation. I'm now reading The Sound and the Furry by Spencer Quinn. Can't wait to see what Chet gets himself into this time.

message 816: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) | 1018 comments I like the McMorrow series too.

message 817: by Seeley (new)

Seeley James (seeleyjames) Just started The Great Gatsby. I seemed to have missed this one somewhere along the line in my early days and am catching up. Writing standards have certainly changed over the last 90 years.

Peace, Seeley

Simon Jenner (simon_jenner) | 17 comments Just finished Bloody Mary by J.A. Konrath - a serial killer tale with equal parts humour and suspense.

message 819: by Barbara (last edited Sep 13, 2013 07:08AM) (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I finished Her Last Breath by Linda Castillo, set in the Amish region of Ohio. An Amish man and two of his children are killed in a hit and run incident and Chief of Police Kate
Burkholder (formerly Amish) investigates. I enjoyed the book very much up until the end which I thought was overly contrived and not believable. I also wish the issue of Daniel Lapp's death (killed by Kate when she was 14) would get resolved already. It comes up in every book and in this story feels like it's tacked on just for form's sake.

From the first three, no, I don't think so. There hasn't been any reference to the past books nor any ongoing story lines.

Correct, any order in the Travis McGee series works as well as any other.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I'm reading "The Case of the Locked Apartment" by Larry Winebrenner. In this mystery the sleuth is 92-year-old Etta Derringer who lives in Epworth Villiage Retirement Community in Florida. When two women at Epworth die unexpectedly, one from what the police think is "suicide by sword" and the other from what appears to be natural causes, Etta's suspicions are aroused. With the help of her top-secret computer and the assistance of family and friends, Etta gets on the case.

Jannene | 775 comments I finished Bones to Ashes (Temperance Brennan, #10) by Kathy Reichs yesterday. Great book! I am kind of glad Pete is moving on. I was growing tired of the double men scenario. I am leading the book read this month. The book chosen is The Bone Collector (Lincoln Rhyme, #1) by Jeffery Deaver . New author for me and it has been a while since I lead a discussion, if you haven't read the book, join me in reading it this month! I will start the book today.

Maureen (montanamo) | 6 comments I just finished Mistress by James Patterson. Good mystery, but the main character is funny. Enjoyable!

message 834: by Ann (new)

Ann | 151 comments Finished Gone Girl yesterday. Interesting finish. Can't really wrap my head around it, yet. Why? Just didn't see it ending that way! I kind of feel like I was riding a horse at full speed, when, unbeknownst to the rider, me, the horse stopped on a dime! Yes, I had a horse named Merlin & I sooo do know what that feels like!!!!!! AAHHHHHH! THUMP...................(horse comes and nudges me with a wet, whiskery, nose, sorry mama.)HILARIOUS. This is a 5 star rating for the book, Don't ya know? Gotta watch my NASCAR race,
go Carl Edwards #99! But I digress, going to start Jodi Picoult Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult as soon as race is over! Happy Reading Friends!

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments Currently I'm reading The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver is one of my favorite authors and I've read and enjoyed several other books in his Lincoln Rhyme series. So far The Bone Collector does not disappoint. Before starting The Bone Collector I started reading, but didn't finish, Shutter Island. I found that book depressing and boring so I cast it aside. Life is too short to read books you don't like.

message 836: by Ann (new)

Ann | 151 comments I didn't think to ask if Jodi Picoult is considered a Mystery/Thriller. When I see reviews with words like: "can't help but devour every page." & "dramatic page-turner, & "Picoult understands the power of love to protect AND to destroy us." & the clincher, "Picoult writes with unassuming brilliance." (STEPHEN KING)! I tend to grab and read! Any thoughts, comments?

My reading marathon has come to an end since I returned to work (glad broken arm is healed/sorry I can't spend all afternoon curled up with a good book) still I have managed to finish up a few books. The Cuckoo's Calling, very good, The First Wave learned a lot about WWII in north Africa, and Crashed quirky but entertaining.

message 843: by Jasmina (new)

Jasmina Kallay (JasminaKallay) | 11 comments I'm struggling with The Cuckoo's Calling - is anyone else finding it a bit slow-going (I'm still not even one third into it)? I've got Baldacci's first King & Maxwell book lined up for my next read, so should I just skip Galbraith (or rather J.K. Rowling) and get onto Baldacci's Split Second?

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments Today I started reading Missing Mark by Julie Kramer. So far it's been a page turner--it's about a TV news reporter in Minnesota who's looking into the disappearance of the groom from a wedding. I just finished The Bone Collector. Iit was superb--I gave it five stars.

I liked this book. Primarily because I thought the two main characters were very engaging. The plot was a bit muddy in places and I didn't pick up some of the subtleties until they were explained at the end.

Beth | 408 comments I'm currently reading a classic mystery, The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins. I'm amazed by how wry and witty it is! I expected the mystery to be interesting, which it is, but I didn't expect to be chuckling so much while reading it.
