If I don't like a book, then I still write a review - mainly to remind myself not to go back there and the reasons why.

Michele Mascari | 2 comments Just finished Cuckoo's Calling and loved it which surprised me since the last book I read by JK Rowling took me a long time to get into and I almost gave up. I did lose track of a couple characters a couple times and had to find out how they fit.

I liked the second one even better than the first!

Russell Brooks (russellbrooks) Struggling through DEAD OR ALIVE by the late Tom Clancy. The military/spy info is great but the story is weak.

Bill Ward (billwardauthor) | 16 comments Just finished and really enjoyed Inferno by Dan Brown. For me it's his best yet!

message 1259: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I finished The Last Kind Words by Tom Piccirilli. The main carrier is Terrier Rand whose family are "gentleman" thieves - no violence. So when Terry's brother Collie goes on a murder spree Terry leaves town. Five years later, just before his execution, Collie asks to see Terry and tells him that he's guilty of all but one of the murders, a young teenage girl. He asks Terry to investigate. Rather than being a straight murder mystery, however, the book is more an exploration of how a devastating act affects the other people in your life. The characters are well-drawn and interesting. Good book.

Lisa Temple | 35 comments I just finished David Baldacci's Camel Club series (again). It's like an old friend I can visit when I need a comfortable distraction from life. I'm in the market for a fun ghost story - nothing too scary. The type that is perfect for a cold or rainy weekend. I love a little chill up my spine but I don't care for gore. If an old mansion is involved . . well . . that's even better. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

message 1265: by Rick (new)

Rick Soper (RickSoper) | 96 comments Sorry I didn't see the ghost story, Shadowlands is more the horror version of Harry Potter, the best Ghost story I ever read was The Shining, but it's also one of the scariest books I've ever read...

I loved Hell House by Richard Matheson. It's not funny, though, I thought it was quite scary. I would say it's old-fashioned scary without the blood.

Ghost Story is my second favorite scary book.

Four stars for this exciting, tense and gripping book.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Just finished Call for the Dead, it surprised me, mainly because I pretty much understood most of it!!! I quite like George Smiley, very interesting character, I don't normally go for Spy novels.

Pcdoctorswr | 35 comments Just finished Ruth Rendell's book, 13 Steps Down. It was my fist by this author, and will probably be awhile before I read another. I found it too slow paced for me. I will be reading The Double, by George Pelecanos (Spero Lucas#2).

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Started Evil Cries by Lala Corriere which I got as a free download and was going along okay until I hit one of my personal 'pet peeves' ...

I'm definitely set in my ways in some things ... lifetime horsewoman and the author had two characters going for a ride on a Shire and a Percheron ... both of which are draft breeds. Something that most readers wouldn't even be aware of but for me, I'm done.

See it is that kind of thing that totally ruins a book for me. Fact checking so very important.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments I hate it when that happens.

message 1284: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Gave up on the free downloads temporarily, hit a longer than usual series of DNFs so I went to my list of "to buy when I need something I know will be readable" books.

More spy/thriller than mystery and just fun. Second book in the series The Spy Is Cast by Diane Henders and fortunately for my disposition, so far so good. Only complaint I have so far is that there has not been enough scenes with a new character ... a sweet little grandmother type who runs a sex store and a 900-sex telephone line! Wonderful characters.

I also read The Cut by George Pelecanos I like the character of Speros Lucas as he is au courant. I am going to read Pelecanos' new book, The Double. He
is in my opinion a very good author.

Over the weekend I finished Hand for a Hand and Cast A Blue Shadow both very interesting but very different. Hand for Hand is a rather intense "Scottish noir" book while Cast a Blue Shadow is set among the Amish in Ohio.

As a change of pace I just started Get Real.

I'm currently reading Cross & Burn by Val McDermid
it was actually slow going at the beginning, I was having a hard time getting interested, but then it took a turn, and I could barely stop reading so I could actually go to sleep last night. I can't wait to see how it finishes.

Tad (tottman) | 139 comments Finished Hollow Bones by C.J. Lyons. Very impressed. Not a page turner, but very well written thriller with an intriguing mystery. I was most impressed that none of the characters really behaved stupidly in order to create a crisis. They were all pretty clever and rational.

message 1295: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished The Body in the Lighthouse by Katherine Hall Page and after reading two from this series, I don't really think it is for me. I find it more drama than mystery and had get through half the book before there was a dead body. I want something faster paced. I'm starting The Drop by Michael Connelly today. I have read a handful of Harry Bosch stories and like them quite well.
