My husband just finished this and really enjoyed it. Looks good to me too.

I think it's a good series, with strong books far outweighing the occasional weak one.

This is the type of book that you hate or you love.

The story and idea are very clever as you follow the two sides of the story, his and hers, Nick and Amy.

Here the story to me is at it's strongest as we follow the downfall of Nick, and the very clever planning of nasty Amy.

But when you are two thirds into the book and the story changes from Amy's point of view it starts to go down hill very quickly and starts to become really silly, and becomes very far fetched.

I can understand it could be made into a good film, and for a while this was heading for four stars, but went downhill very quickly, and a three is quite fair, I think.

This book has very much torn readers either way, as lovers of this story, or not.

For me not keen on reading this author books, although I do have her other two books.

This is why we all enjoy different authors and different books

This book is part one of a three-parter, so a lot of stuff is left hanging.

Steve Anderson | 87 comments I'm enjoying The Honorary Consul The Honorary Consul by Graham Greene by Graham Greene. Great stuff as always from one of my favorite writers.

Recently finished Peace Peace A Novel by Richard Bausch by Richard Bausch, a tightly written short novel about a WWII patrol in Italy. More a psychological tale about GIs and fear than an action-filled combat story.

Jo Nesbo is a really good writer with amazing descriptions and very confusing and OTT plots.
Redbreast is one of his better books and is essential in the character of Harry Hole. His books are best when you read them in order as they do have a character arc.
Sometimes his plots are very silly and most times he is far too gruesome and makes to big a thing about Harry Hole's height!

Alex Garneau Just finished Think of a Number and it was a bit of a let down, not sure I'll keep on with the series.

Here's my review for reference

Starting Brave New World now. Nothing to do with mystery or crime, just a short intriguing read that came up while searching boards :)

message 3267: by Carol (new)

Carol | 152 comments Just starting The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen. I read the first book in the Department Q seriesThe Keeper of Lost Causes.
This is a quirky, darkly humorous series, but the crimes are serious. Carl Morck has survived a shoot out, but didn't draw his weapon to save 2 of his colleagues. His talents for crime solving place him as the head and only employee of Department Q which takes another look at the cold cases of Copenhagen. With a severely limited budget, he collects an assortment of characters to assist him.
This series has all the elements of the typical Scandinavian crime novels, with an enjoyable twist of humor which enlivens the characters and the stories.

4 out of 5 stars

Escape from the system?

Sports journalist Russell Martell is on holiday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico . His wife Rosalita has recently died and Russell feels lost and hurt, drifting through life. Then his journalistic senses begin to come alive as he starts to get the hints of stories: not sports stories, but crime and current events, with a hint of politics. What is the real story behind a body found in strange circumstances near the beach front? Is the rumor of a police raid on a suburban house really connected to drug cartels? Who is the colorful character Devon (Devo) that appears to be making a splash in town, at least according to the bar scuttlebutt? All these questions seem to draw together, but only more questions emerge. Soon Russell and his friend, Johnny Miles, will become caught up in an adventure where mystery and uncertainty abounds. How will ordinary citizens survive, let alone take action in a world of gangs, police and government? Seve Verdad’s Finding Devo: A Novel Adventure is a story of mystery and action which will intrigue and excite the reader as they follow Russell and Johnny in their desperate attempt to escape disaster.

message 3288: by Bill (new)

Bill I'm currently enjoying the first Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers. Pleasantly surprised, it's my first exposure to Sayer and I like some of the subtlety (*sp*) and thoughtfulness of the story; some of the discussions between Wimsey and Parker and also Wimsey's issues with his previous wartime service. Also enjoying the last Cliff Janeway mystery, The Bookwoman's Last Fling by John Dunning. A great series. Finally, just started Dolphin Island by Arthur C. Clarke and liking very much so far. A nice mix.

Finished up Murder on the Rocks which was OK, Beneath a Buried House which was better, and finally The Wives of Los Alamos which was terrific, 5 stars.

There are very mixed reviews of The Wives of Los Alamos but if you can get past the writing style of first person plural it is a moving and insightful depiction of a unique time and place during W W II. If you are watching the series, Manhattan, on WGN it is especially interesting.

As for reading, back to mysteries with Sun on Fire and A Good Man Gone
