Heresy (Giordano Bruno, #1) by S.J. Parris
A phenomenal historical fiction mystery.
Just started:
The Doomsday Key (Sigma Force, #6) by James Rollins
Another in the series by James Rollins. Mix of archaeology, historical religious fanatics, international crime & itelligence agency disputes. Should be good.

Jan Ryder (janryder) I'm a little way in to Kill Her Again by Robert Gregory Browne I'm not a big fan of paranormal elements in mystery thrillers, but I'm enjoying this one so far.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 4769 comments Just finished Death of a Nag (Hamish Macbeth, #11) by M.C. Beaton
4 of 5 stars

After his engagement is broken, Constable Hamish Macbeth is looking forward to rest and relaxation in the coastal town of Skay. But when he arrives at the somewhat dismal bed and breakfast, his fellow guests include the annoying spinster, Miss Gunnery, a single man, a London family, two young "tarts", and Bob Harris, who so nags his wife that everyone wants to kill him.And then someone does. The couple who run the boarding house are not above suspicion either.
I listened to this story with great enjoyment.
The narrator has a pleasant voice and is good at accents and different characters.
The story itself is a lovely "cosy" mystery, with no sex and very little violence.
I enjoyed the plot, and there were no shortage of red herrings.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a cosy murder mystery. Am going on to listen to another M.C. Beaton Death of a Perfect Wife (Hamish Macbeth, #4) by M.C. Beaton

Annie (bionerdannie) | 8 comments The last couple of weeks I've been on a mystery spree. Too Many Cooks (Nero Wolfe, #5) by Rex Stout The Red Box (Nero Wolfe, #4) by Rex Stout The Judas Goat (Spenser, #5) by Robert B. Parker The Wind Through the Keyhole (The Dark Tower, #4.5) by Stephen King and on a general Spenser/Nero Wolfe/Stephen King kick. I've also been sprinkling in The Yoshinobu Mysteries by John A. Broussard here and there. I'm on the last one at the moment. They're fun undemanding whodunits, and I really enjoy the setting (an imaginary Hawaiian island called Elima).

Scott Parsons | 34 comments I just finished Natchez Burning. Greg Iles has long been one of my favourite authors. Natchez Burning confirms that he is a truly great writer. 800 pages may seem like a lengthy tome but he writes with such command of the language that he pulls you into the story and it's almost impossible to put it down. The pages whizzed by as I was gripped by the enthralling characters and plot including the subplots.

Sean Peters | 155 comments Blind Eye (Logan McRae, #5) by Stuart MacBride

First book by this author, I would think my last.

This has never happened before to me, but I just could not finish this book, got to 338 pages and gave up.

Throughout the book there was no strong story, no tension, suspense, thrills, action, well not much, no build up of the story. The writing was weak, and just got thoroughly bored.

For me to put a book down, it has to be bad and it was, and the lead character was not that much of a personality.

This is why we all like different authors, books and stories.

Back to a good book with The Target by David Baldacci

Wow. I have trouble believing that. Maybe you should have started at the beginning of the series, Cold Granite. I'm on the third one now, Broken Skin; although I don't seem to be ripping through like I think I did with the first one. I just loved the first one.

But, of course, I don't think that much of Baldacci. He's another one of those authors who seem to need an editor.

message 3430: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I finished Hallowed Bones by Carolyn Haines. Doreen - a spiritual healer - is accused of murdering her handicapped infant and PI's Sarah Booth Delaney and Tinkie Richmond are hired to prove Doreen's innocence.

Doreen admits that several men are candidates for father of the child, and the detectives question them, thinking one may be the real killer. Most of these men are kind of shady 2-dimentional characters, but they serve their purpose as possible suspects.

Many of the recurring characters in the series are on hand, including Jiffy - the ghost that gives Sarah advice, Coleman - the married cop in Sarah's life, Connie - the married cop's disturbed wife, and Sarah's friend CeCe - the tough transgender reporter. Sarah's former lover Hamilton also puts in an appearance, and Sarah is conflicted between her attraction to Hamilton and her love for Coleman.

This is just an okay cozy mystery with rather uninspired detective work. 3 stars.
