message 3451: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments I finished Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. New Yorker Cayce Pollard is a marketing consultant and a follower of a website called Fetish Footage Forum (FFF) where mysterious film clips - periodically published online - are analyzed by people around the world.
As the story opens Cayce is in London to evaluate a proposed new shoe logo. The woman who represents the logo designer, Dorotea, seems to take an instant dislike to Cayce and may even be responsible for a break-in at Cayce's London residence.

Cayce is soon hired to find the makers of the inscrutable film footage, which might be useful for a marketing campaign. During her search for the filmmaker Cayce meets an array of interesting people and travels between London, Japan and Russia. Everywhere she goes, however, Cayce senses she's being followed, which seems to be proven when she's attacked in the street.

The book is chock full of engaging characters and essentially reads like a thriller, as Cayce rushes here and there to discover something that unknown (and hostile) 'others' also want to know.

All this leads to an exciting and believable climax. Very good book, highly recommended.

I don't know what to read next. A house full of crime/mystery novels, and I have no idea what to read. Someone should choose one for me from my list of crime fiction.

Skye | 2105 comments I will throw back a comment you made to me that made a lot of sense: when you kick back to relax, what are you in the mood to read? That's all that matters, Nancy; let your mood determine the next book.

Right now I don't have time to relax, so I'm in the mood for something light.

Try Rubbernecker. It is a on the lighter and strange side. Don't know if it is on you TBR list as there are LOTS of them. Lol. I see you liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It has a similar feel.

Gone Girl Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2 1/2* rating.
Nick's wife Amy has gone missing on their 5th Wedding Anniversary, and he is a suspect.
The story is told alternately by Nick and Amy. But who, if anyone, is telling the truth?
I just could not get excited (except at one point) about this book. At that point my jaw dropped and I thought 'Okay, now this book is going to get really good.' But unfortunately it didn't.
There were bits of the book I really liked; e.g. Nick counts his lies to the police - "This is the third/seventh/eleventh lie I have told the police" - but we don't know what the other lies are that he has told.
I found a lot of the story to be quite predictable, and the characters themselves unlikable and almost caricatures.
I found the ending disappointingly banal. The only reason I can see for it ending the way it does, is that there is a sequel planned. I, for one, won't be rushing to read it.

Sean Peters | 155 comments The Target (Will Robie, #3) by David Baldacci

After my last book, and not being able to finish The Stuart MacBride book.

Great to get back to a author that I know I am going to be happy with and I was.

Knowing that I enjoy this type of book, with assassins, international travelling and plots and of course the great characters Will Robie and Jessica Reel.

This book has you hooked from the beginning with the return of Will Robie and Jessica Reel but now with the added bonus of a North Korean assassin, and a good one.

David Baldacci seems to know his knowledge on North Korea, and a great plot build up with exciting tension, excitement, suspense and lots of fast paced action from across the world.

Reading an author I enjoy so much, makes me appreciate them as to write a "good book" is not quite so easy as you think as there are many weak books out there as well.

I just could not put this book down and had to get to the end and the conclusion, and lots of twists and turns.

Enjoy

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Just finished Crime School: Money Laundering: True Crime Meets the World of Business and Finance . It has the feel of what you'd get if you plied a former Mountie with a steady stream of Molson and just let him talk -- an engaging walk around the playground of crooks and their money, spiced up with a series of war stories. If you're on the prowl for a detailed look at how to launder that Mob money under your mattress, though, prowl some more. Four stars if it gives you what you're looking for.

Perhaps one of MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin books? Or any of the Leo Waterman series by GM Ford. Or, The Rattle-Rat by Jan Willem van de Wetering.

Oh! Or one of Colin Cotterill's two series.

Skye, when you do "add book/author" all you do is type the name of the book in the little box. Hit search. Then click "add" on the right book. If it's not the right edition, you can click on "other editions" and add.
