Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Okay, so, hi. This thread is here for one explicit purpose; to save you making decisions for yourself. Sounds fantastic, right?

So, I just finished the book I was reading and I have several sitting here waiting to be read. The idea is that I bang up a list of what they are, and anyone who feels so inclined can have a look at each book and say which they think is dying to be read next. Or hell, whichever has the title they like most, whatever.

I suppose I'll get the ball rolling..

Just finished Back Story, and I have the following to read;

Prophecy's Ruin by Sam Bowring
Pirate Sun by Karl Schroeder
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Center of Gravity by Ian Douglas
The Stormcaller by Tom Lloyd
The Thousand Emperors by Gary Gibson
The Thursday War by Karen Traviss

I really need to stop borrowing MORE books from work.. :/

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3567 comments OK, after reading all the blurbs (and having read The Name of the Wind), I think you need to read Center of Gravity :)

Mainly because I haven't read it, and the blurb looks interesting! And I like the title, even if "Centre" is spelt US style...

That irked me too :P

Is Name of the Wind much chop? It seems to get recommended to me on a weekly basis.

I liked it. It's probably not one of my absolute favourites, but it's intriguing, and there are hints of stuff that kept me reading in the hope of finding out more, and I've re-read and enjoyed it again (always a good test for me). I also liked the sequel, not as much as the first one, but I'll still read the next one because I'm hooked on finding out what happens.

On the other hand, it does tend to take years for the author to write and publish the next book - there was four years between those two books, and it's already two years past book 2. There's a prospective publishing date for next year for book 3 - and 384 ratings for a book that's not yet written!

It appears to be a love or hate kind of book for most people. Our older teen kids loved it.

Mish | 3601 comments Great idea Liam

Okay I'm next. I've got 3 books sitting on my shelf for the Translated fiction challenge

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Which one should I read first

Sorry by Zoran Drvenkar or The Secret in Their Eyes by Eduardo Sacheri or Monsieur by Emma Becker

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) My vote is for Sorry

Mish | 3601 comments Sorry it is. Thanks Liam

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Me again.

Keeping It Real (Quantum Gravity #1) by Justina Robson or Mirrored Heavens (Autumn Rain #1) by David J. Williams or Pirate Sun (Virga, #3) by Karl Schroeder

Kathryn | 3569 comments I just noticed that you didn't get a reply to your question, Liam! I assume you've started by now, but my pick (although none are my cup of tea!) would be for Mirrored Heavens...

I'm currently finishing The Elegance of the Hedgehog and struggling through Remembering Babylon, but once I finish one of them, I'll start one of 3 library books on my shelf:

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Grand Days by Frank Moorhouse Grand Days by Frank Moorhouse, and

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Which should I start first? Decisions, decisions!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I reckon Joy Luck Club.

I'll vote for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - nice title! (That's my entire reasoning...)

message 12: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks it is (sorry, Liam!) - it's due back in 3 days and I've just realised I can't renew it as someone has placed a hold on it!! Guess I'd better get moving with it then!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) No that's fine I'll just cry myself to sleep.

My turn again.

The Sunless Countries (Virga, #4) by Karl Schroeder or The Pillars of Hercules by David Constantine

message 14: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'd go for The Sunless Countries, Liam - it's GR rating is 3.94 - that's pretty good!! And the main character is described as a "history tutor and dreamer", which I love the sound of!
