glad you got to go, barry. i couldn't and was totally disappointed to have missed it.

Neil Gaiman is scheduled to come to Nashville July 10 and I eagerly await seeing him.
Barry wrote: "It caught me by surprise, but our local indie book dealer sponsored Dennis Lehane at the Groton Public Library. The place was packed, with both overflow seating outside the room and cars parked on..."

Yeah right. Shows how much you know. Chestnut Hill is the exclusive side of Boston, you just happened to catch the mall "between clients."
In other Lehane news....

As someone on Facebook says, "not sure how I feel about this..."

I'll reserve judgement on Lehane writing Travis McGee, but why do they call it a WW2 novel? I believe the story is about a fortune stolen in WW2, but the novel takes place much later.

Well yes, never let it be said that I lead you to the bad part of town.
I'm less concerned about Lehane writing McGee than I am about DiCaprio being "attached" to the project. If by attached they mean "slated to play McGee," well, to me that's like Tom Cruise playing Reacher.

I can see Dennis enjoying writing McGee and imagine he will add some nuance to the HBO series Boardwalk Empire too as he was named creative consultant late last year for season four. I am happy for his success. Maybe crazy, but he reminds me of a musician who tries out all kinds of different sounds and excels at a wide variety (like Paul Simon, who often reinvents himself )

The real surprise though was that I had seen him in Boston talking about Live by Night (as I recall, that was the trip where Carol sent me into abandoned mall on the bad side of town), this talk was completely different. As always, he was funny and engaging.
