To be honest, it can be anything. Whether it be a social issue I'm passionate, or the nature of a certain person or community. Or it could be a farther ''out there'' idea within the imagination, big or small. Sometimes it can either just ''hit'' me or a slow burn that's been evolving for years.
It can come from anywhere...

In the case of my Southern Crime works (my biggest sellers), I write liberal issues in an otherwise conservative region. I also do the same with my sci-fi/fantasy works in that I try something different.
I'm also one of only a small handful of writers who covers the theme of Autism in his fiction, transcending Crime/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror, Literary, and Non-Fiction. Despite this disorder, these kids do have a special gifts and abilities most others don't. Helping raise an Autistic brother with it also helps.

Love each one for different reasons, Crime allows me to exercise demons and fears through murder to sometimes explore liberal issues in the otherwise conservative South. The fact that a number of them sell doesn't hurt either.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy is allows me to take risks I've always wanted to, but never dreamed would happen.
The non-fiction entertainment books allow me to profile an interesting figure in the business, and make some small yet easy money doing it.
My Autism themed works overall allow me to explore a theme that's very personal to me and enables me to explore a different way of thinking most don't pay attention to.

I honestly don't know how I would reward myself in that way -- as I've never had money before. Maybe buy a yacht, or homes in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, or the exotic locales of Europe.
Honestly, I would use it to further ensure my brother's happiness and love for his artwork.
