Recently I realized I was not sure how the recommendations work, so I decided to ask around and hopefully with better understanding we can all improve the recommendations we get from GR.
PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE WAY RECOMMENDATIONS WORK:
The recommendations for each shelf are shelf-specific. If there isn't any overlap between shelves, the recommendations should be different.
HOW TO UTILIZE OUR RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. List books at one or two chosen genre-specific shelves, that you gonna use for recommendations. Check the rest of the shelves that you use for categorizing your books as not for recommendations.
For instance I have separated my Young Adult books from the Dytopian, even though they are mostly Dytopian. This helps to get more specific and DIFFERENT recommendations for those TWO shelves, otherwise most or the recommendations are repeated.
2. If you want to get MORE recommendations for a genre it is better to list a genre for recommendations then shelf, unless you have a lot of books on that shelf.
HOW TO SET-UP/CUSTOMIZE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SHELF
Go to THIS page. Check the column recs for all the shelves you want to get recommendations. The more they are genre specific the better recommendations you are going to get.
*I for example have only 3 helves for recommendations. What I have done is I removed the rec. option for shelves like 'to-read' and 'currently reading'.
HOW TO GET RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SPECIFIC GENRE?
Go to THIS page. Check all the genres you would like to get recommendations for. If you don't see the genres in the list, click on Don’t see your favorite genres here?. Enter ALL genres separated by a comma. Give it a few minutes and all the genres will appear on you recommendations page. Use popular names for it like Space Opera, no abbreviation.
Don't forget a lot of genres have subgenres, so it is better to use the subgenre name. For instance cyberpunk is better then science fiction tag.
You can have repeated recommendations for shelf and genre, but I am not sure yet if this has any point.
MARKING BOOKS AS 'Not Interested': After you mark books as "not interested," your recommendations will be slightly different. A "not interested" book will never be recommended to you again, even in the far future.
A GREAT NEW FEATURE:
You can check out all the books you've marked as Not Interested and UNMARK them from HERE.. This link can be found on the recommendations home page under More Actions.
If you are going to reorganize, every book that you switch shelf for will appear on your feedback. It's good to turn off the option temporarily. You can do it from edit profile-feeds: Uncheck "Add a book to your shelves" (First option).
I WOULD LOVE SOME FEEDBACK AND ADVICE:
I would love to know if you find this topic usefull.
Also I would love to hear how have you optimized your recommendations and more ideas for improving the recommendations.
