Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) A rather interesting insight about zoos from the novel Life of Pi; it is stated that in the wild, territories are large not because the animal loves the freedom of wide, open spaces, but because they have to include the basic requirements for survival; food, water, members of the opposite sex, social space, and other such idiosyncratic elements different species need. A proper enclosure has to take into account the essential and spatial needs of the animal, and the purpose; to rehabilitate a species threatened in the wild, or to snatch creatures away from their natural habitats for the gawping amusement of us humans.

Alex I'd also agree and say it depends. In general, I think Zoos are fine. Most of them care about the animals and make sure conditions for them are good. It's definitely a good option for endangered animals and to be honest, the animals in the Zoo don't really care about where they live, do they? It's different than in a Circus, where animals are treated badly..
So, as long as the living conditions are fine, I think Zoos are okay.

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments Zoo's do more help than people may think. They teach us about animals and they can show us how far the world is in danger. They are useful except in the case of Panda's for breeding programs. (Panda's can only mate on three days of a year and it is different for each Panda). Zoo's are also good as they have experts for those animals so their welfare is looked after.
