Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 335 comments I fnished a couple of days ago Don Quixote, and I like it very much. The main character is a mad man, but also wise and altruist, a dreamer. For those who are interested I write a review on it.
Now I'm reading Desperation, till now a great book of King, with suspence and mistery.

message 1208: by H (new)

H Hunt | 98 comments Desperation is a tale of King's (am a super-fan of his) that's not quite like any other, it's a trip, interesting read 2b sure...

message 1209: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I managed to get the audio book of American Gods, this is the 10th anniversary edition that's more of a dramatization than a straight read. Also it uses an expanded version of the book that includes some of the earlier parts that were cut. I'll be getting into that right away. I read it a few years ago and really liked it. Also still reading Fairwell My Lovely, an old time detective novel by Raymond Chandler, and The Shadow Queen... romance by Bertrice Small.

I guess I'd better give Desperation another read. So far it's my least favorite King book... but I've changed my mind about a lot of his works so it is probably worth another look.

message 1213: by Aditya (last edited Jun 01, 2014 09:25AM) (new)

Aditya Finished Moonlight Mile Moonlight Mile (Kenzie & Gennaro,#6) by Dennis Lehane probably the weakest installment in the Kenzie & Gennaro series but still better than a lot of thrillers out there. It is good to see an author finishing a popular series once he runs out of idea instead of milking the cash cow.

I also read this book a couple of month ago and I like it, although if the style is different from Gaiman's classical. It's sad, but it's also exciting. Another good work of Gaiman.

Some reviewers said that it's more a light weight young adult book than a really serious work like, say, American Gods.

Yes, you could compare it more to Coraline, also for the young age of the main character. All the story is a reminder of facts of many years before.

I'm Debra, new member.

I just finished "Swiss Family Robinson". Enough said.

I have just started an ANNE RICE novel. "The Witching Hour" I have read Rices'. Vampire Chronicles" and enjoyed them. Rice is a great writer and her historical bits intervened all through the stories are treasures. I never thought I would read vampire stories. Couldn't see myself enjoying them, but Rices makes vampires likeable people withqtender hearts and not just killers with a blood lust, I actually found myself caring about them. I expect I'll enjoy Witches by the time I'm finished the novel.....but we'll see.

Toddle oo!

I'm wishy-washy regarding Koontz. Some I love and others I don't like at all. I liked Hideaway, Servants of Twilight, Midnight, and a few others but sometimes he bores me with way, way too much description.

message 1246: by Debra (new)

Debra Mccauley | 25 comments Hi! I'm Debra.

I'm a new member, well a year or so, but I've been sitting back watching and learning how this works. This is my fifth or sixth post..

You're a great bunch. You've taught me allot.

Now....the question I'm answering today is " What are you reading right now?"

Stephan's Kings "Mr. Mercedes".

Because I'm new I'll let you in on a silly little ritual I (or we, as my husband is involved with it) do whenever I get a new book. I don't do this with all my books,. Just the books I buy and intend on keeping in my library. You may ask which books make the library? Well, I'll tell you. Number one. Books by authors the Stephan King that I collect. Number two, books that have been given to me as gifts. THE CLASSICS that I'm fortunate enough to AQUIRE. I also collect rare books. Enough said I'm sure you get the picture.
I have one rather ornate book case that hold my favourite and cherished books. You know the kind of books, the kind of books where if you woke up in the night you could just stick your hand in and slide out any book, open it up and read, knowing without doubt you'll enjoy it because it came out of THAT special book case.
So far I have over two thousand books that make up my cherished library.. I'm a bit of a snob though, there are so,e books and authors I wouldn't have in my,library, but I will say, I might not read them but someone does so that's a good thing, because if someone is reading something, it may lead them to something better. Reading is good. Silly I know.

When I AQUIRE a keeper, first it gets labeled with one of my printed labels printed just for my books and I sign it.
With each new book my sweet heart husband makes me a book mark with the Title, authors name, date acquired, and there's a space four me to rate it.

I've been very I'll for a few years so I have a couple of dozen books waiting and I just finished reading Wally Lambs "We Are Water" I haven't written my review yet, that's next.

But in closing I'll say this. I love, love books. I adore reading, since I was old enough to read by myself. Our parents read to us, I have two brothers, they are golfers! Enough said. My first book was one was one I pulled out of my parents library, " 12 Prairie Avenue". I can't remember the author, hey I was about eight. I looked for that book when we were downsizing my parents home, couldn't find it. But I'm searching. Some of theirs I kept the rest I gave away. Like I said I love books and reading. It is my passion. What would hell be like for me? Once when I was about fourteen I saw a "Twilight Show" and in the story there's a man, a quiet man who is an accountant. All day long he plays with numbers and when he gets home his wife wants ALL of his undivided attention. Which he grudgingly gives. The wife is so controlling that he's not allowed to read, his passion, but he's really quiet super shy and can't worked up the nerve to say,IM GONNA READ. HE SNEAKS IN TIME AT THE LIBRARY, HAS HIDDEN BOOKS AROUND THE HOUSE. HE EVEN READS ON HIS LUNCH HOURS, THE HAPPIEST HOURS OF HIS WEEK. BACK AT HOME HIS NAGGING CONTROLLING WIFE EVEN TAKES LABELS OFF CONDIMENT JARS SO HE CAT EVEN. READ THEM.

One day, to make a long story short, the world gets the big one while he is safely at work in the vault! He comes out and all the people are gone, and right across the street is the
New York Public Library! I know, corny! But here's the hell part....he trips and breaks his glasses, special glasses made for him in another country and he can SEE without them!!
That would be hell for me.

Happy Reading

Debra

Hi Debra - Quite a ritual you have going there with your best books. Wish I was that organized, and I'm pretty damn OCD, but maybe not with books. I remember seeing a rerun of that Twilight Zone Episode, I think it's one of the most famous and, yes, it certainly describes hell for a lot of us.

message 1249: by H (new)

H Hunt | 98 comments I recently watched that episode of the Twilight Zone from like 1961 it said on the info, it starred Burgess Meredith I believe. He was a bank teller & was in the banks vault @ the time of detonation. What a bummer ending, poor man:( And the kingdom was lost for want of a pair of specs....
