I felt Night Surf was one of the weaker stories in what otherwise was a great book.It was too vague for my liking. On that note I hated The Stand too, so maybe apocalyptic tales don't generally appeal to me.

Aditya Kathryn wrote: "I'm reading Different Seasons by King and still working on A Game of Thrones."

Love Different Seasons possibly the best collection of novella ever, the only novella collection that can match it would be The Sherlock Holmes book containing all 4 Holmes novellas. But I still felt Night Shift edges out Different Season as the greatest collection of King stories.

The only King book I have hated so far. Some other users of this group were equally shocked when I said & I agree that to each his own.

What ruined the book for me was the fact that it had too many unnecessary secondary characters that added to the page count but not the plot in any meaningful manner,a severe identity-crisis that the book suffered from.I am still not sure if it wanted to be an age old tale of good triumphing over evil with a healthy dose of spirituality or a sci-fi post-apocalyptic human drama. The worst part was the weak ending which was a huge sin for a book over 1000 pages long.

Ultimately King's writing was good as always but the plot was just awful.

Rainier | 22 comments I start The Stand at least once a year and I can't finish it because I've seen the movie. The movie plays in my head every time I try to read the book. One of these days, I'll start and finish the book.

It's a great book, way better than the movie in my opinion. Hope you enjoy it.

I liked the Talisman, but I think I liked Black House better. Read them out of order, that didn't help. Tried to read other Peter Straub novels but couldn't get through them, although King says he's an excellent writer. When you run out of king, best thing to do may be to re-read.

message 323: by Christina (new)

Christina Lott | 5 comments Nick, if you want a Straub book that has the feel of Talisman and Black House you should try Floating Dragon.

I really enjoyed Ghost Story by Straub. It's the only thing I have ever read by him but I wouldn't mind reading more if they were like that one.

message 327: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Thanks Kathryn. I'll add that to my list. I need to learn everything I can about ghosts.

message 329: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 2 comments Just starting "Everything is Eventual" a collection of short stories.. its been on my shelf for about five or so years... Just finished 22/11/63... a mammoth sized hardcover..it was good.. I have read most of King's books in the mid 80's but have forgotten most of them, except for Pet Sematary and the Shining. Just starting to read him again. I stopped reading after I got tired of all the children he was killing off in his books...so I left it for many years.

Felipe Gálvez Valenzuela (er_felipe) | 24 comments Is it similar to the movie, Jacob? I watched battle royal a few months ago and I would like to read the book some day. I just want to know this because I still can remember most of the scenes from the film, so maybe I need to wait a little bit longer in order to forget about the movie.

Not the Kubrick/Jack Nicholson one. the TV re-make King scripted is closer.(but not a better movie.)

Sorry about that, on my Ipod the last comment was the one by Jacob -in fact comments were all messed up because of the pictures- but now I see on my PC that the last who made a comment was Aaron. :/ sorry!

I've read the manga. Is the book more psychological? Because the manga was kinda splatter.

SSteppenwolFF | 36 comments Novia wrote: "@Costas DON'T read the manga because it is NOTHING compared to the book. Battle Royale is amazing....the manga and the movie didn't do justice fir the book"

Right ... Anyone who knows anything about fiction should know that a manga version of a book isn't going to be a true representation . The manga was meant to be "splatter" published for a "splatter" audience .

message 348: by [deleted user] (new)

What the feck is manga?

message 349: by Novia (new)

Novia (novroz) | 76 comments @SStepen The manga is too echi, a bit porn that aims more to highschool girls looking sexy. I was so disappointed when I read the manga and didn't want to finish it.

@Aaron Manga is Japanese comic. We manga readers rarely calls it as Japanese comic/graphic novel, we always call it in its Japanese term: Manga (just like we call Japanese animation as anime)

message 350: by Costas (new)

Costas Ioannou (greek_tornado) | 77 comments @Novia well yes it's more graphic than most manga, but I like darker, more mature manga. Especially nowadays when most manga are about high school comedy/romance, or action/shounen.

In case you are interested, at the end of the manga there is an interview with the author of the book and the mangaka. Takami doesn't seem displeased with the manga.

Anyway thanks for your input, I'm very interested in reading this now! I do have several other books in my 'to-read' list though.
