OMG i just finished reading that book (not really i stoppped in the middle and couldnt restart it) and me and my mom were in hysterics because i was telling her about dinosaur shifters named ty for t-rex and so on and we just couldnt figure out why anyone would write it seriously!

Arent't there rats and snake shifters in the Psy-changling books by Nalini Singh?

According to this author shifters retain their human size, I'm thinking 120 pound hamster (or squirrel there's one of those too) is actually kinda scary... Although they might actually be like the capybara

She was cursed by a demon, for lack of a better term. Mostly because I can't think of the right one ;-) But yeah, anything she can think of she can shift into.

I read a series once that was just wolves, but when they changed, their magic enabled them to keep their clothes. Like they'd change into a wolf and then when they went back to human they'd have they exact same outfit that they had on before they shifted. I always thought that was very very strange.

Also in the Anita Blake series, Anita actually tests as all the same animals that Chimera was, and even more now, but doesn't actually shift. I also find it kinda gross in that series and a couple others that there's a wet gloppy sound described, and in Anita's they actually throw off some blood and fluid if I remember correctly. That's just nasty. But I find it almost as weird that in the Mercy Thompson series it takes the wolves 15 minutes or more to change, but Mercy and the other "walkers" can change in one thought. Maybe it's supposed to be because the walkers are born with the ability and wolves are changed humans. I don't remember it being discussed as to why, just that it's mentioned in every book.

I think I read that same book and also thought it weird that they kept their clothes. I don't like it when an author strays too far from the traditional supernatural traits. Also, how is that even possible?

Strangest shifter? I'd say the were-rats in the Anita Blake books, but a were-hamster easily tops them.

I read a book that had a bunny shifter. The Anita Blake series has so many kinds, but the swan shifters were different

I read a blurb about 7 or 8 longhorn shifter brothers and it was a menage with one little human woman. I am a Texan and a University of Texas graduate and think longhorns are fabulous, stately and historical but the idea of getting it on with Bevo and his brothers does not do it for me. (Of course the longhorn mascot is a steer, but still.)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the were skunks that are mentioned a few times in Molly Harper's Naked Werewolf series. How would you get the smell off your skin if you sprayed someone while you were in your animal form?? That's gotta be tough, to shower in tomato juice every time you spray!! LOL!! I've thought of this discussion every time I see the skunks mentioned.

Even though I just read through this whole thread, I can't remember if anyone has mentioned the were hyenas in the Anita Blake series. They wouldn't be too bad if it weren't for their crazy leader, whose name I can't remember. I can handle the were creature factor, but not so much when combined with a transvestite BSMD top. That's just a little too many "alternative lifestyles" in one person. I could handle maybe two of those together, but all four? That's a little difficult to handle. I'm so mad that I didn't read any of Hamilton's books when I still lived in St Louis, because I promise I would have stalked every coffee shop and gym in her area to find her. I have a million questions that I'd like answered about how she came up with the ideas that she has. I'm guessing that the polyamory aspect came from her own desire to be poly, even before she married her current husband. I think it's very bold of her to "come out" to her fans, at least in her blog posts.

One of the things I've noticed after reading books from various authors is that you usually get an idea of who the authors are through their writing. It's not always the case, but often it is. Their personalities, thoughts, and beliefs often times leak out from among the pages. Writing is a very intimate thing and often times it attaches an imprint of the author's soul to it. I'm so not surprised by Hamilton's confession.

Shelly Laurenstein always has hybrids in her books. Lion/tiger or ligers. The most disconcerting one to me will be the polar/lion and wild dog mating. Wtf?! Lol

Zenina Masters has an erotic series called the Shifting Crossroads that includes swans, porcupines, owls, peacocks, snakes and a Giant panda. And the Bed and Breakfast is run by a Djinn.

I looked up Stephanie Burke and Zenina Masters, and I can't say I'd buy anything by either of them. Zenina's book looked like they made some kind of sense, but $4 for a less than hundred page book? I don't see that happening, even if I did win the lottery that I never play! And Stephanie Burke's books just seemed WAY out there. Yes it a fantasy genre of a sort, but hers were way too fantasmical!! I had to make up a new word to fit in out out there they are.

Well, I must confess to auto-buying Zenina Masters, who is actually Viola Grace. One of those guilty pleasure hits twice a month :DDDD LOLOLOL

I found a seahorse shifter, but only in gay romance stories and only two of them.

I read about a character pretending to be a were-hamster (Helen Harper Bloodfire), that was funny rather than tragic because the characters and the author were in on the joke, I don't know if I'd have managed if I was supposed to take a were hamster seriously.

But Coral? That really odd- particularly when you consider that coral is mostly lodes of tiny organisms forming a colony.

One of Celia Kyle's is all about bears & wolves & hyenas, but the h is a were-mole. And I quite enjoyed it :)

I just learned so much from reading this thread. O_o I don't think I've read any books with such extremely strange shape-shifters, unless Animorphs (The Invasion) counts...

My best answer would have to be this weird sea creature, octopus-like man that shows up briefly in, of all things, Batwoman: Elegy.

Bite Me (Pride #9) by Shelly Laurenston is about a honey badger and a tiger-bear hybrid

The Bitten Point series by Eve Langlais has unique shifters as well

Snake shifters - it just grosses me out for some reason.

I can't remember, but there are a few octopus shifter books around.

I don't think the rats have a real clan name, they're only ever mentioned as "the rats". And I'm going to guess you have a better handle on "BlackSea" by now, unless you missed the last couple books. Though I couldn't tell you what animal any of them turn into.
