Date Finished: 7/7/13

Book: Grave Mercy
Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by R.L. LaFevers

Review:
I love assassin books. And the whole main character is a nun assassin - it reminded me of ninjas. Which I also think are fun to read about. Ismae is a very strong heroine. Raised by an abusive step father and about to be sold into a loveless marriage, she manages to rescued by a convent. It's there that she meets others like her and finds her calling as a deadly assassin.

I loved that all the characters grew over the course of the novel and the romance was a great surprise. It's one that grows with the characters and felt natural as it progressed.

I'll be reading the next book in the series as soon as I get my hands on a copy as I'm sure this series is just getting started! I expect great things to come.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Week 6: Distopian
Abandon the Night (Envy Chronicles, #3) by Joss Ware
7/10/13 **** stars
Review:
The third book in the Post-Apocalyptic world created by Joss Ware, was a little difficult to get into. But by the middle of the book it picked up a lot became completely engrossing. The main difficulty is with the two main characters that this installment centers on. We have met them before - Zoe was 8 when the end of the world came and a young teenager when her family was killed by gangas (zombie like creatures). She has been hunting them ever since as well as the man who unleashed them on her small village. She is an extremely difficult character to like as it's hard to find anything likeable about her. But Quent has been fascinated by her since he first saw her and they have made appearances in the other two books. Quent's father is the one who unleashed the holocaust on the world and his mission is to find and kill him. Once we get to the point where they are (somewhat) working together, the book moves along at a very fast pace. The other characters and the world that the author has created is quite fascinating and I look forward to the next one in the series.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Was over on the discussion thread and someone posted this useful bit of information.

18 shelves left
3 are winning shelves (freebie, keepers, maybe) 17% chance of one of these being called next week.
The 2 most popular shelves are urban fantasy and shifter- they each would help 8 teams get a 4-in-a-row.
Next is vampires at 6 teams, then reader's choice at 5.
The ONLY shelf that wouldn't give someone 4 in-a-row is ghosts and spirits.

message 427: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Poo. I hope those are called. I can't see our card right now -- but if we had all our stamps would we have a chance at a 4 in a row?

message 428: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments No, the shelf calling gods have not been with us this round.

Monica (nutz4reading) | 382 comments WEEK 3 STRONG HEROINES
Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs
7/11/13 ***** stars

review:
This is my first book by Patricia Briggs and I am sorry I waited so long to read her books! I will definitely be reading more of her books especially in this series. I enjoyed Mercy, Adam, Samuel, Jesse, Warren and Zee.

I have read other books and series with super natural creatures but this is the first where werewolves were the main characters. They are very entertaining and sexy at the same time. It was fun reading about male werewolves and how territorial they can be just like their human counterparts.

The Chemistry between Mercy and the Wolves and other super naturals was great. Mercy is a coyote and doesn't belong to a pack. She doesn't know much about her history or her powers. I get the feeling that as you go further into the series she will start to learn more about her past and powers.

Judithe | 6566 comments Host (Rogue Mage, #3) by Faith Hunter
Host by Faith Hunter
Shelf 6: dystopian
Date finished:7/9/13
Rating: ★★★★ 1/2
Thoughts:

This is the second review...first had more detail, but GR ate it and I'm not energetic enough to do it again...so super-trimmed down version!

I finally started the Rogue Mage trilogy with last week's shelf selection, Bloodring. And happily, could finish it with this week's shelf.

Thorn St. Croix has come a long way since we met her in Bloodring. She is discovering more about herself, her past, and those who set events in motion much farther back than expected. She is strong, and learning to rely on her friends, something that was much less an option when what she is was secret. Their help and support is very necessary as the final showdown with the Darkness looms.

This is a very rich world, and one I need to read again more slowly...I just had to know how it would end so read too fast! It ended quite well, but left me strongly hoping for more. I really enjoy Ms. Hunter's female leads, and hope to see more of Thorn!
