Last year, my sister gave me a book I really wanted, then admitted she read it very carefully before she gave it to me. Lol!

Justin (justinbienvenue) I just picked up the Ultimate Supernatural Horror Box Set by F. Paul Wilson. It's a set of 6 books and I got them all for just .99 cents! Someone was promoting it on the Horror Afficionados group for a week. Anyone interested in a great deal should check it out on Amazon, they may still have it up for that cheap!

Amrit Chima (amritchima) Stepping into an indie bookstore is dangerous for me, because I have to support!

Just bought:
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz

Oh yes, and the Kindle versions of:
The Sound of Songs Across the Water by Rob Yardumian
and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino

Happy reading!

Shelley | 36 comments I never buy books ($$$), and I never buy books about poetry (most criticism is so boring), but I just bought Glyn Maxwell's On Poetry because I was marking every page.

Black words on white empty: think about it. He does.

Dawn | 547 comments I have a small income so I can only handle mini-splurges. My last mini-splurge: Roses by G.R. Mannering and A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin.

message 61: by Titta (new)

Titta (happodan) | 10 comments I have my last exams today so I decided to buy some books to celebrate that. Unfortunately the town I'm living right now has a really limited collection of books in English so I could only find two:
The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks.

message 62: by Sookie Cullen (new)

Sookie Cullen Most people head to the grocery store before a snow storm and stock up on food supplies, bread, milk etc... NOT ME.. I headed to my local B&N and stocked up!!
Life after Life
Where'd you go Bernadette
Fault in our Stars
Reconstructing Amelia
Memoirs of a Geisha
Bound
Careless People: Murder, Mayhem and the Invention of the Great Gatsby
Tell the Wolves I'm Home

I will pick up Ireland in the next few days since it is my March read.

message 63: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 36 comments Kristen--Speaking of the book, have you seen the Monuments Men movie? I just saw it. I really respect George Clooney for trying to make a movie about art. Pretty amazing.

No, I haven't. I'm reading MM now and I'm having a hard time staying interested in it. I enjoy the parts dealing with the art treasures, but the personal lives of the men aren't keeping my attention.

Cleopatra's Daughter - Michelle Moran
The Marriage Plot - Jeffrey Eugenides
When the White House Was Ours - Porter Shreve

Susan Bernhardt | 4 comments I purchased "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt. I've only just started but I'm fascinated by it.

A couple of days ago I finished and wrote a review on "Awakening (Children of the After #1)" by Jeremy Laszlo. It was an exciting, thrilling read.

J. Bennett (jbennett_gwbw) | 7 comments My splurge is a book that I've had sitting on my shelf for years -- Tess of the D'urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. It's one of those I've always meant to get around to, but I've been distracted by the latest flashy thing. I finally dove into it, thinking it would be a "eat your vegetables" book. So far, I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit! Poor Tess.

message 70: by Hrishabh (last edited Mar 24, 2014 11:16AM) (new)

message 73: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren | 293 comments Gosh, I don't feel so bad! I'm the type who goes to the library book sale, picks up a dozen books and then go home and order more. With three gift cards from Amazon I was very bad, or very good, depending on how you look at it! And these are only the ones I bought last month!

Just finished Miss Buncle's Book, D.E. Stevenson -- quite a fun read and quick!
The Husband's Secret, Liane Moriarty -- for the book club; must begin tonight!
The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton -- free!
Navajo Autumn, R. Allen Chappell -- shades of Tony Hillerman... I miss him!
Flying Too High, Kerry Greenwood -- because I did enjoy the TV series and the first in the series
Hangman's Daughter, Oliver Potzsch
Los in Shangra-La, Mitchell Zuckoff
Virals, Kathy Reichs
Island Beneath the Sea,Isabel Allende
Earthly Delights by Kerry Greenwood

message 76: by Robert (new)

message 77: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Got quite lucky in the clearance rack of my local Half Price books and then snagged a few non-clearance things as well.

Clearance (all $1.00)

Demolition Angel - Robert Crais
The Left Hand of God - Paul Hoffman

Non-clearance but just had to:
Small Gods and Hogfather - Terry Pratchett

Think that's it for the last trip. I was pretty happy with what I found.

message 78: by amaldae (new)

amaldae (staticatku) I just bought S. (Goodreads made me do it and I can't wait to get my hands on it!), A Wild Sheep Chase (I need another Murakami summer after 1Q84 last year) and The Namesake because I've seen the movie and it sort of came with the Murakami book. :D Pity I've got so much other things to do and books to read first...

message 83: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) That's quite a mix -- have you read other books by Ally Carter? I love that series, but do recommend reading it in order.

message 85: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) Just have to say, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America is an excellent read. Some of the revelations in that book were really unexpected, and I really started to forget I was reading non-fiction because the author does an excellent job of telling these two stories. Really great read

message 86: by Sookie Cullen (new)

Sookie Cullen Good to know Scott.. I can't wait to read it.

message 87: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy Lambert (jeremylambert88) | 2 comments I'm new and figured I'd make my first post here instead of a new thread since I have nothing to promote. Anyway, Amazon had a big sale that ends today so I got a bunch of books for my Kindle.

Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt
Sleep Tight by Rachel Abbott
The Russian Trilogy by Noel Hynd
No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday by Tracy Bloom
Between by Jessica Warman
The Chronicles of Katrina by Karin Tabke
Blame It on the Fame and In Need of Therapy by Tracie Banister

All in all, 13 books for less than 4 dollars

message 88: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 36 comments I'm smiling at J's comment about Tess being an "eat your vegetables book." Interesting metaphor, since so much of modern literature to me is like snack food. Fun and then gone. At least vegetables offer nutrition!

Shelley, http://dustbowlstory.wordpress.com

message 89: by C.T. (new)

C.T. Tunnell (CTTunnell) | 24 comments I recently bought

* Eisenhorn Omnibus by Dan Abnet
*The Ravenor Omnibus by Dan Abnet
*Fatal Alliance (Star Wars) by Sean Williams
*Darth Bane: Rule of Two by DrewKarpyshyn

That's enough splurging for me for a while. Those omnibuses will keep me busy for a while alongside my current reads.

message 90: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ashman | 15 comments I used to do the same J.H - only with CDs not books. Used to buy albums for my sisters that I wanted. Luckily we all had similar taste in music! I can see why you didn't want to wait before reading a Stephen King book!

message 91: by Robert (new)

Robert Raker (robert_raker) | 60 comments Very old used bookstore in my neighborhood is sadly closing but everything is $1. Kind of went crazy but also felt guilty about it...

message 92: by Emma (new)
