If this a mis-direction, then I apologise in advance.

David Gemmell wrote a number of books focussed on the 'hero' and he did have some nasty/witchy/ sorceress'y type females to deal with.

This 'sounds' very much like one of his; I shall go away and peruse what's left in my stock of 2nd-hand books :)
