Update #1

Striking quote:
"Punishment was meted out in other ways: in increments of solitude, monotony and, harshest of all, self-reflection, both figurative and literal".
"Dependence would wither his spirit."
"Stop asking so many questions."
"The absolute and irretrievable loss of her dignity."

Word image:
"The more she suppressed her nature, the stronger it burst forth when her resolve weakened, as it inevitably did."

Sound image:
"Another brutal, unexpected hail of stones."

"Stones of her own, falling hard and heavy into the space between them."

Haiku:
Dependance degrades-
The intellect, the spirit
Hope to stand is lost.

Update #2

Striking Quote
"Humanity's survival demanded sacrifices of everyone, moral as well as physical."

Word image:
"The despondency that weighed on her like a lead apron."

Sound image:
"Sounds of cars whizzing past, a snatch of song from a radio, the tweeting of birds, the chirping of locusts, the crunch of two pairs of feet on gravel."

Haiku:
Sudden stillness.
Wakes up a morbid mind.
Chaos starts again.

Update #3

Striking quote:
"Not a prison, she told herself, a sanctuary."

Word image:
"She felt numb and hollow, empty of everything except for a tiny spark of hope."

Sound image:
"It started with faint whispers, sporadic and indistinct. As your brain slipped further into fragmentation, they grew louder, giving way to full blown auditory hallucinations."

Haiku:
Quiet, mocking whispers...
Scrape the inner layers.
Altering senses.

Update #4

Striking quote:
"Preposterous, capering objects of ridicule, barely recognizable as human beings."

Word image:
"She kept her replies short and light, sparing them the truth: that she felt increasingly as though she'd wandered into hell."

Sound Image:
"Murmurs, which faded to silence."

Haiku:
A lost wanderer.
Walks familiar path to hell.
Upset yet content.

Update #5

Striking image:
" I'm free, she thought, though she knew the notion was absurd; she was anything but."

Word image:
"The sun was a molten red orb, like a great burning heart."

Sound image:
"Finally, the sound of weeping first one woman, and then two."

Haiku:
Freedom burns inside her.
Absurd notion still desired.
Hope that leads to weeps.

Update #6

Striking quote:
"No, someone had to work on them for a while, with the real persistence, to make them skip over unease, dismay and distress and leap so quickly to abject fear."

Word image:
"... As if she were an alien with few too many tentacles."

Sound image:
"...heard a whisper of sound, the soft swoosh..."

Haiku:
A transformation.
A swan to an alien.
Stares from wide eyes.

Update #7

Striking quote:
"She wondered how many of them were liars, their outer purity masking crimes as dark or darker than her own."

Word image:
"...these people who felt so repelled by and morally superior to her."

Sound image:
"The ensuing silence..."

Haiku:
Outer purity
A disguise that masks crimes.
Deceives me and you.

Update #8

Striking quote:
"Not to mention yours. There'd be one more person who's seen your faces, one more person who could expose you."

"R-O-A-D: Ragged, outcast, alone and desperate."

Word image:
"She had been dead for some time now and not even known it."

Sound image:
"Her spirit puddled within her, a laden thing, shapeless and abject."

Haiku:
Faces are to hide
Eyes are to be covered
Souls are to be saved.

Update #9

Striking quote:
" A thought bloomed in her mind. She rejected it, but it stole back: I have to forgive myself."

Word image:
"She studied the other woman, thinking what a puzzle she was: harsh and ruthless one minute, kind and generous the next."

Sound image:
"... He didn't answer the prayers of the faithless or the damned."

Haiku:
Thoughts can bloom like weeds.
Some need to be plucked; some kept...
Others forgotten.

Update #10

Striking quote:
"Her helplessness at this moment was so absolute as to be a kind of release."

Word image:
"He led them down the tunnel for perhaps fifty feet and stopped at what appeared to be a dead end."

Sound image:
"The absurdity of it all bubbled up inside of Hannah, erupting in a helpless snort of laughter."

Haiku:
Helplessness bubbles-
Inside those who have lost hope.
There is no way out.

Update #11

Striking quote:
"A box with in a box" (pg268*)

Word image:
" The briny tang of sea was the first thing her senses registered."

Sound image:
"...heard the driver's door open and the crunch of the footsteps."

Haiku:
I live in a box...
Within a box; in a box.
The list never ends.

Update #12

Striking quote:
"Wickedness, perversion, abomination: here it came, the virulent, all-to-familiar vocabulary of shame."

Word image:
"A pitiful creature sat there..."

Sound image:
"Some things don't deserve to be forgiven ..." (evil sounding)

Haiku:
Pitiful creature
Subjected to shame... then some.
Lost. To not be found.

Update #13

Striking quote:
"A sinner who walked among you, hiding behind a mask of godliness while deceit burned in my heart."

Word image:
"You must set foot upon the path with nothing but yourself."

Sound image:
"Cleaning her of hate."

Haiku:
They walk with masked deceit.
Among us these sinners breed.
Pulling us with them.
