Ken B | 6810 comments I've never read The Monkey's Paw. That might make a good next classic read for a compare and contrast discussion after having read The Bottle Imp.

That's an excellent idea!

Hi, Kimberly. I read THE DOLL this morning between snoozing and reading, I completed the task. (view spoiler)

Pamellia, I read The Doll awhile ago and though I agree it was a bit predictable it was still a nice traditional horror short.

And proud of it!

Predictable, yes; but the atmosphere really drew me in.

Yes, actually, I agree that the predictability did not down-play the atmosphere. Also for a short story it had a lot going on that I was drawn to. The drama between the husband and wife and the housekeeper...I sort of cared about them and what was going on. I wanted to know what the outcome of the custody was...well, I suppose the husband got full custody!! lol...but yes, it was a nice ghost story and I would recommend it to anyone who was looking for something ghostly to read

I have to admit that I'm a sucker for a good ghost story. :)

Me, too! :)

Pamellia (michiganparents) I actually find that I am not a big fan of ghost stories as told in the written word. However, I do enjoy the ghost stories that have been handed down generation to generation. Have any of you heard of The Gray Man from Pawlies Island, SC? That's one I find interesting.

I haven't heard of that one before.

This story is a bit different than what I have always heard. I don't think it tells that if you see the Gray Man before a storm your property will not be harmed.

Ken B | 6810 comments So. what are the reads for this week? I saw suggestions for "The Doll" for contemporary and "The Willows" or "The Monkey's Paw" for classics.

message 66: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Ken, those sound good to me. When suggesting titles, please include the links to the stories. I went back a page and clicked on the link for The Doll and it's no longer free, it appears. But I'm doing all this between working, so I'm not 100% sure.

THE WILLOWS!!!

message 69: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I think most everyone has read Monkey's Paw, and it's similar to The Bottle Imp in a way. I've created this week's thread for The Doll and The Willows.

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Oh, I see that Ken has never read "The Monkey's Paw." Poor sap. How did he manage to get through high school and college without that being a requirement?

Public schools?

It really sounds familiar. I have probably already read it. If so, I will re-read it anyway.

message 74: by Mixofsunandcloud (new)

Mixofsunandcloud | 538 comments It could sound familiar because one of the Simpson's Treehouse of Horror stories was based on it.

message 75: by Ken B (new)

Ken B | 6810 comments You guys got to check this one out if you haven't already. It is really short, just a couple of pages. It will take five minutes to read. I liked it.

Never heard of it. I'll check it out later. :)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments We never picked a Monday classic/contemporary story to discuss this week. Ken, you're supposed to remind us. Stop playing with that baby and spend more time here.

Funny you should say that because that is exactly what I have been doing. I haven't had the time to get into a novel. So, I have been knocking out a bunch of classic shorts that I never read. I have found some really good things that I can't believe I missed.

Ken's been fishing around in his shorts again?

Yeah, I revisit some of the classics pretty regularly!
