Angela M Currently reading The Book of Secrets.

Just finished We Are Not Ourselves - 3.5 stars - debut novel - recommended.

message 654: by Liis (new)

Liis I finished And the Mountains Echoed and rated 2 stars. Didn't find anything 'wow' about this book and do not understand why everyone are so impressed by his writings.
I'll give try to his other books, but only because I need them for challenges and I bought them. We'll see.
Why I didn't like it? It seemed like there were too many stories that connected somehow - half of these things you even don't need to know and they won't change anything.

About to start Unlucky 13

message 655: by Sara (new)

Sara | 102 comments I just finished The Dovekeeperswhich is kind of hard to read. First of all it's not a light read, and second it's so emotionally charged with caste abuse and wife abuse. I read 52 pages so far, and I hope it will get better soon.

Liis
I agree that And The Mountains Echoed wasn't his best work but The Kite Runner & A Thousand Splendid Suns will hopefully change your mind about his story writing. These are 2 of my all-time favourite novels.

Liis Thanks, Barbara.. Once I'll read them I'll write here how I liked those :)

Diana Jorge-tulk | 18 comments I'm currently reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and I love it. I'm on page 650 and I'm sad to see it end. The writing is so well done and the characters are very well developed. I can understand why it won the pulitzer prize. Don't let it's almost 800 pages scare you off. It's so well written that you don't even notice. It's great piece of literature.

message 662: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Diana ,
I couldn't agree more ! The descriptive writing is amazing . One of my favorite books. !

message 663: by Liis (new)

Liis I loved The Goldfinch too! :)

I finished Unlucky 13 last night and liked it better than couple of previous books in this series :)

Now reading Homeless in Hawaii

message 664: by Angela M (new)

I can't wait to read this. I really hate reading books in hardback so I usually try to wait for the paperback edition. I have pre-ordered it but in Canada it will not be released until Jan 2015 :(

message 666: by Beth (new)

Beth | 108 comments I just finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home - 5 stars, totally loved it!

Bridget's Quiet Corner (chaptersandscreens) Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg
I remember watching this movie when I was younger, so when I saw the book, I had to pick it up and give it a try! :-)

message 668: by Lela (new)

Lela (lacslc) | 191 comments Beth, I loved TTWIH, too. I read it last year and couldn't stop telling every reader I know they should read it, I just finished an okay sort of book called "Dead on Demand." It gets decent reviews but really didn't grab me. Before that one I read "Breathe" which was good. It's not normally my kind of book - at least it hasn't been but it was fun. It's also the first of more which I didn't know and am impatient for the rest of the story! Now, I'm starting "The Plover" which is by one of my very favorite authors, Brian Doyle.

message 669: by Lela (new)

Lela (lacslc) | 191 comments Forgot to say "Breathe" is by Annabelle Wolf.

message 670: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia Nelson-Hurt | 1 comments I recently read two of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's books "Americanah" and "Half a Yellow Sun". They were both amazing. I would highly recommend them both.

message 682: by Liis (new)

Liis Diana, I know what you feel. But people are different and there is thousands of different opinions out there!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)

I finished Homeless in Hawaii and rated 4 stars. It was fast and easy read, there were couple of moments when it got annoying (there's the 4 star rating too). I hoped to learn a little bit more about Hawaii, but are satisfied the things I did learn. I'll definitely read more from here.

Starting In the Middle of Nowhere

message 689: by Annie (new)

Annie Thomas I have just finished 'My Father's Fortune' by Michael Frayn. It's a beautifully written family memoir - poignant - with echoes I think of all our families and the way we sometimes see the ones we love. Maybe reminds us not to leave the loving things unsaid - absorbing read.

message 690: by Britany (new)

Britany | 921 comments Finished One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez 3 stars...

Liked it, but didn't fall in love with it. Tells us about the history of Maconda, and the family that founded it-- the Buendias.

Liis Diana, I finished In the Middle of Nowhere and rated it 3 stars. It was good fast reading. Main character was in some points too teeny for me, but she only was 15/16.
I'm not sure that I would pick up the second book.

message 695: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (worthwhilereading) I finished The Lobster Kings by Alexi Zentner and found it to be a satisfying read. There is a lot of family & small town drama. Some of the intertwining themes were forced but overall a good read and you get to learn about the lives of lobster fishermen & women.
3*
