Karl Drobnic | 66 comments If you liked A Town Like Alice, see if you can find a movie named "Paradise Road". It is on the same theme of European women imprisoned on Sumatra during WWII, and is based on real events. I used to live in that area of Sumatra where these events happened, and were it not for the books and movie, this would be forgotten history. Though much of the movie was filmed in Australia, the locations are extremely like Sumatra, and you will get a terrific visual feel for what these heroic women went through.

Lela (lacslc) | 191 comments After reading 3 tough books, I went for my favorite mind candy and read Stephen Booth's latest Brit police procedural, "The Corpse Bridge." He writes well & I enjoy the characters. There is a lot of snark between them which adds a layer of fun not always found in BPP. As soon as I finished that, I began "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines. Great novel! The characters seem so real I had to keep reminding myself it was a novel. Sad, sad story that points out in clear prose the problems with the death plenty in the late 1940's. To me, there is a problem (understatement) with the death penalty period! But, the issue here is not the killing per se, it's the unfair, prejudiced white law enforcement, jury and judge in the trial of a poor, barely schooled young black man and how the people who live in his "quarter" try to help and prepare him. I read it in one-half day. Highly recommended if you can stand it.
