Tim (zerogain) | 93 comments While the reviews for the new Capcom game "Remember Me" lead me to not desire spending 50 dollars on the game, the general concepts behind it are very interesting to me. However I haven't read many books that feature memory modification and the incumbent discussion of what one's memory means to one's identity. I know many of my fellow group members are widely read, and I wonder if any of you have any suggestions for a good read that deals with those themes. If so, please share?

Thanks!

Michele | 1154 comments Soldier in the Mist by Gene Wolfe, has a main character who is a soldier in ancient Persia (I think) who has lost his memory and can't even remember day to day. It's very well done, he's a great writer. There's 2 more books in the series after that one.

I can't thinkof anything like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that is a book but that movie was good.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments I came across this new book Memoria. A Corporation of Lies where memory erasure and memory implantation is the main theme - don't expect anything so profound as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but it is a techno-thriller raising some good questions about how memories build our sense of identity and what the world would be like without knowing which memories to trust, but on an individual and collective level.

On the same lines as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but also has action sequences and all the elements of a thriller. Not perfect, but good nevertheless.

I've read it. It's a decent enough book, but I don't think it really fits what he's looking for.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 287 comments I think so too - it was just okay, and more emphasis on the thriller than the issue of memory modification.

Rik | 777 comments Flashback by Dan Simmonsis a book about memories. In it flashback is a drug that allows anyone to perfectly relive past memories. It in part creates an apocalyptic America that is in decline because of how many are addicted to the drug trying to relieve better times. For instance the main character is a Flashback addict who spends most of his time reliving happy memories with his deceased wife. Being a thriller book there is also a murder mystery, vast conspiracy, and action to go with it.

Total Recall is based on the PKD short story:
We Can Remember It for You Wholesale

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1903 comments Dick played with memory in a several stories, I'm of course not able to remember them right now. How's that for coincidence. On a slightly tangential note Memento is a great non sci-fi movie that deals with short term memory loss in an interesting way. I should really watch that again soon.

Warren | 1556 comments Arg! Now you reminded me of a book I meant to read.
The book was set in China and all but a few people forgot an entire month. The problem is that I can't find a decent list of Chinese scifi.
(Maybe a trip to Mars will trigger something)
-----------
Got it:The Fat Years by Chan Koonchun.
A few million people have read that book.
It's not your Walmart special but it supposed to be quite good.
