FOR REFERENCE, READ THE LAST SENTENCE ENDING ON PAGE 139 LEADING INTO 140. IT SHOULD READ
"...Your task, in the dreams, is often to cross under the trees through the shadows before something happens."

Pynchon's prose is already archaic and complex enough without dozens of errors on behalf of the publisher. I advise you return it for any other edition or purchase another.
