Riya Ooo, and I'm currently reading For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. It's a great classic and it's very intriguing; I can't wait to see how everything plays out. I definitely enjoy it, but it's also a classic which for some reason means that I can't read more than 15 pages at a time. I'm not sure why, but I just can't- something I've never experienced before. I still totally like it though!

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Hi Riya, welcome to the group. The name is promising already.

I know what you mean about classics. Are you reading that for school?
At least Hemingway uses clear language and short words :)

I like the shows you mentioned.
Have you heard of The Mentalist? You should check it out because there's a scene in Psych where Sean tries to imitate the guy in The Mentalist.

Hi, Riya. Great corner! Welcome to the group. I've always wanted to read Hemingway.

I normally read classics for school, but I actually saw this one at the library and decided to pick it up. Yeah- if Hemingway went all out fancy on me I probably would've left the book a while ago!!!
I've watched a few episodes of The Mentalist, but I've always liked Psych more- it's just so funny!!!

Thanks Kyle!! You should definitely try this one, it's actually quite interesting.

I'll put it on my to-read list!

Riya Just finished For Whom the Bell Tolls. If you want to read my review it is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... It essentially says that it was a great read. The writing was simple, but it totally worked. If you like classics or want to read a great one I definitely recommend it. It isn't full of action or twists and turns, but it was a fascinating, straightforward read.

message 10: by Riya (new)

Riya Well, I'm now reading Forging the Sword. It's the third book in the Farsala trilogy. In all honesty I'm only reading it because I'd already read the first two and when I saw it at the library I thought I might as well finish it off. The trilogy as a whole is okay...The plot's interesting, but it always takes me a while to truly get into it. The series as a whole has definitely improved as the books have continued, so I just hope this one has some amazing ending.

message 11: by Riya (new)

Riya I've finished Forging the Sword. I actually really enjoyed this book, although since the first two books were so mediocre I doubt I would recommend this series to anyone. If someone's already read the first book I would tell them to continue, but it's definitely not something I'm going out of my way to tell people to read.

message 12: by Riya (new)

Riya I also just finished Fire. This book on the other hand was seriously amazing!!!! Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. I would recommend this to everyone- whether you've read Graceling or not! My review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... I essentially elaborate on how the characters were all super diverse and intriguing. I fell in love with every single one of them! I also thought the plot was amazing! It had so many twists at just the right times and it helped enhance the characters even more. This book was pretty perfect.

I have added this to my list already, after some good reviews. I agree, some classics really do read slowly. I did find that Treasure Island and Lord of the Flies, go pretty quickly if you want some exciting classics.

Just found Graceling at a UBS for cheap, and cannot wait to read it. :D

That's great to know- I think I'm definitely gonna check those two out. I don't mind the slow ones, but it's really hard to persevere through it!

You're in for a great read- Graceling is seriously fantastic! :D

message 15: by Riya (new)

Riya Just finished The Mysterious Affair at Styles! It was my first Agatha Christie book and I definitely loved it! If you like mysteries I would definitely recommend it. I personally don't think it can ever compare to Sherlock Holmes, but it's still really entertaining. I didn't see the ending coming at all!!! A great book if you want to keep on guessing who did it until the end! My review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 16: by Riya (new)

Riya I've now finished Silverfin. I started this book with extremely low expectations. I didn't think it would be anything at all. I instead was in for a great, interesting treat that kept me on the edge of my seat. This was a fascinating story that showed a new, younger side to the James Bond everyone now knows. I think that anyone who loves a good action-packed story should definitely give this one a try! My review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 17: by Riya (new)

Riya No problem James! It was about James Bond as a child and it definitely seemed like him :)

message 18: by Riya (new)

Riya Well I've got good books and bad books!
Seriously amazing book that EVERYONE should read: And Then There Were None. Seriously best mystery ever!!! I honestly am so completely in love with this book. I didn't see any of the plot twists coming, and I can't even imagine the time that must've gone into planning this story! My ecstatic review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 19: by Riya (new)

Riya Now for the worst book...ever....This is my third book to get one star (excluding the Twilight series which are so low they don't even get a rating): The Body Finder. It was so completely terrible. Like there was literally one good thing about it: Jay. Other than this one character, this was terrible. WORST MYSTERY OF ALL TIME. And the romance wasn't much better- if you even count making out a ton as romance. My scathing review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 20: by Riya (new)

Riya I now finished Hex Hall. The sad part about this book is that I'd already read it before but since it was so long ago I was at an awkward stage where I had vague memories that only made me find the plot less predictable. It was entertaining, but it wasn't amazing or anything close. I'll definitely try to read the next two books in the series, but I'm not going to be buying them any time soon. My mediocre review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 21: by Riya (last edited Jul 15, 2013 12:18AM) (new)

Riya And now I have finished a truly amazing book: Graceling. A book that definitely has so much power over me and has reminded me what makes reading so amazing. I honestly believe everyone should read it, simply so they can see what it really is to read a powerful book. My loving review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 22: by Riya (new)

Riya Well I finished Article 5. It was an intense, fast paced read. I read pretty much the whole thing in like 2 days, and it was a really refreshing read. I hadn't read such an action-packed book in a while, so it was great! I definitely can't wait to get my hands on the sequel :) My excited review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 23: by Riya (new)

Riya I literally just finished Legend for the second time. And it was epic. I don't even know how I could forget anything about this book. It was so completely awesome. I'm totally going to buy it right away and read it tons more times. Can't wait to start the sequel, Prodigy. My review of withdrawal: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 24: by Riya (last edited Jul 28, 2013 09:20AM) (new)

Riya Finally got around to reading The Mark of Athena!! It was great, just as I expected. Plot was intense and fast paced- exactly what I expected! Characters were awesome; I couldn't get enough of Leo Valdez- that guy is AWESOME!!! My smiling review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 25: by Riya (new)

Riya Finished Code Name Verity. It took quite a long time since I couldn't get interested in the plot or characters enough. I wasn't impressed at all; this book definitely wasn't anything special. My okay review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 26: by Riya (new)

Riya So glad I read Bitterblue. The entire Graceling series is amazing, so I loved reading the conclusion! Sadly it was a slight disappointment- mainly because of my extremely high expectations after reading the first two books. Either way, here's my conflicted review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Is this Book any good?

message 28: by Riya (new)

Riya It was great!! Your classic dystopian with super intense charterers!! The plot was awesome and fast paced but te complexity of the characters is what makes me truly want the expand book!

I hope you don't mind the picture. I just have thing about pictures.

message 30: by Riya (new)

Riya No problem!! Sometimes covers really do define a book, and as far as covers go the none for Article 5 is pretty nice :)

message 37: by Riya (new)

Riya Finished Beautiful Creatures. The minor characters were great, and the plot was fantastic. Really want to read the rest of the series- I honestly have so many questions left unanswered! My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 38: by Riya (new)

Riya And I'm DYING over Prodigy. Like it's honestly SO amazing. One of my favorite books. The twist at the end KILLED me!!! If I don't get Champion the day it comes out I might cry... This book was just amazingly perfect. Everyone should read it!!! My DYING review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 39: by Riya (new)

Riya Just finished my reread of Incarceron. I didn't like it as much as I did the first time, but it was still a great book and I definitely look forward to reading the sequel (which I will be starting in 2 seconds!) Here's my sad review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 40: by Riya (new)

Riya Read Sapphique (the sequel to Incarceron). I was sadly disappointed... This book had tons of potential, but the characters were all quite one dimensional. Barely any of them grew as people, and they weren't super interesting. I had no connections with them and didn't feel any loss to finish reading about them. And the plot was pretty good, although again not amazing. Well, here's my disappointed review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 41: by Riya (new)

Riya I quickly read through Fallen by Lauren Kate. This book was what I expected- somewhat interesting, but nothing close to special. The plot was SUPER predictable, and I don't think there was even one thing that I didn't guess before it happened...The characters were quite good though. They were super complex, and the love triangle wasn't the worst one I've ever read. I look forward to reading the sequel some time. Here's my character-obsessed review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 42: by Riya (new)

Riya Just finished one of my school summer-reading books: Black Ships Before Troy: The Story Of The Iliad. I've always been a Greek Mythology fan, so I definitely enjoyed it. I also really want to read the Robert Fagles translation of the Iliad even more now. Either way, it was simplified quite well. It was very fast paced, and all the characters were basic, yet interesting. My brief review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 43: by Riya (new)

Riya Finished my next summer-reading book for school: A Long Way Gone. It was a super sad story about this young boy who tries to escape the war, and ends up fighting in the army. I feel super grateful about all my experiences now and how easy my life has been compared to the terrible things Ishmael went through. My depressing review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 44: by Katie (new)

Katie (ksj32) | 27 comments The only war-centered book I have ever read was "Suicide Charlie" which I had to read for school. I loved it, but it was so horribly sad. I try to steer clear of anything war related. I have still never seen "Saving Private Ryan." Everyone is shocked by this, but I don't want to see that stuff. I can't handle it. The movie Hotel Rwanda (again, extra credit for school) had me in a weird, numb, depressive state for a few weeks. It's so crazy what ppl go through ...
I don't avoid all sad material though! War stuff just gets to me in a different way.

message 45: by Riya (new)

Riya Yeah I know what you mean. I watched the movie Blood Diamond, and it's one of the best things I've ver seen, but it was also so sad!! I honestly related to the emotions of the kid in this book, but I still couldn't come close to wrapping my head around all the stuff he had to go through. I don't seek it, but I do think it's important to occasionally read a war book- it helps remind me of how fortunate i am, ya know?

message 46: by Katie (last edited Aug 23, 2013 10:37PM) (new)

Katie (ksj32) | 27 comments Exactly. I read "The Spirit catchs you & you fall down" recently, and it was GREAT. The main story was about a little girl w/ epilepsy whose parents immigrated here after the Vietman war, which they escaped by WALKING FOR ONE MONTH to get from Loas to Thailand (w/ several kids in tow!) It talked about all the awful things they saw along the way & all they endured, but that was only a couple of chapters. I can handle that. And I definitely know what you mean about how it makes you grateful that your life is so easy by comparison. Very Humbling. I also read "Tears of the Dessert" (about Darfur.) It was very good too. It was about the war, but centered around one woman's particular experience - how she grew up/ her schooling/ their traditions - and then what happened when things went wrong. Hmm, I guess I can handle it. Just not in large doses!

message 47: by Riya (new)

Riya Oh wow that seems super interesting. Yeah, I feel it's very important that these war books are true to the story. That's what I loved so much about A Long Way Gone; I knew that the whole time he was writing from the heart and truly meant every little word. Wow- both of those books seem really interesting. I'll have to check them out sometime! And yeah! I can't only read war books, but they're great for the occasional read!

message 48: by Katie (new)

Katie (ksj32) | 27 comments Writing from the heart is nice. Its cool how ppl can open up & let you into their lives.

I don't mean to push it on you, but here's my review of "The Spirit..." if you're interested.

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Enjoy your next read, whatever it is! :)
Thanks for the chat.

message 49: by Riya (new)

Riya Haha thanks, I'll check it out right now!!! Hope you find a good book too :) The chat was great; stop by whenever you want!!!

message 50: by Riya (new)

Riya So I kinda read a bunch of books and forgot to post about them, so here goes like a ton of posts!!! :D

To finish of my school reading books, I read a book all in Spanish: La Guerra Sucia. It was a really easy, quick read and I actually enjoyed it. The characters were barely anything, but the plot was quite interesting. It was super mysterious, and I totally didn't expect the ending at all!!! If you want some easy Spanish practice, it's definitely worth the read!
