The History Book Club discussion

This thread is for the "Finish the Sentence" game.

Bentley will begin a sentence.

Then the next person needs to finish my sentence...and then this is repeated with the next person starting a new sentence built off of the previous one and the next person finishing the previous person's sentence. And then with the next person starting the next one.

Let me give an example:

Bentley I opened the refrigerator, and

2nd person: saw my favorite ice cream

3rd person: It was pistachio

4th person: and I placed quite a scoop in a bowl.

Now I'll start...

Start of next sentence:

I picked up the spoon

and threw it at my cat

Unfortunately, the bowl of ice cream fell on the floor and

redecorated my Persian rug

Harvey bought a new rug and

wished to sin on it with

his private stash of bourbon.

While drinking his bourbon - some bells in the distance were heard ringing but

Elenor Glynn was unavailable for

dinner on the terrace.

Dinner was magnificent with candlelight yet something

felt strangely eerie.

It was the ghost of

a past haunting memory, the last candlelit dinner alone.

Before the death of Evelyn's mother,

he had wished her dead.

He had no idea her mother

(How spooky, my partners name is Evelyn!)

had begat such a wonderful daughter, when she was such a shrew.

The candle guttered, he could almost feel her

fear. She got up and ran towards

the light at the end of the hallway - and she tried to escape through a door which lay ahead.

She managed to get the door open, but only after

her sweating hands slipped on the knob - all of a sudden

thought she was going to faint but instead she

she disappeared into thin air. All of a sudden Harvey who had had a bit too much bourbon with his magnificent dinner woke up from his stupor and felt the chill in the air - something had happened and someone had been in the room - but was he alone now?

He rose from his chair and

and then Harvey slumped back and fainted.

She, then, splashed cold water in his face.

At this, he opened his eyes and

looking confused, he mumbled

where am i?

The room looked familiar but in the corner was

an old wooden box. He tried to open the box because

there was a strange noise coming from inside

What was in the box? Was it of this world? Fear gripped Harvey.

As Harvey reached to open the box, he was touched by a

Scorpion - Harvey flicked it away but was almost relieved - He decided to further open the box and ventured near the lid and Oh?

As the noise in the box quiets to a low hum, Harvey brushes a thin coat of dust off the box top and sees an ornate inscription that reads

Not to be opened until after my death - ESG

"Evelyn's mother?" he wondered.

Harvey knew he should wait for Evelyn's daughter, Eleanor, to open the box

But he could not contain himself and pried off the lid.

"A broken music box," exclaimed Harvey as he also gently tugs a piece of paper from

the cogs of the small mechanism, releasing

an old black and white picture of Evelyn and some man.

Harvey had no idea who this man was or what his connection was to Evelyn - did Eleanor have any idea? Something about this photo made Harvey very uneasy. Had he met this man when he was traveling in Oman? How could that be possible - Eleanor and her mother had never left Seattle!

Harvey turned the picture over, looking for a clue. Was there a date or possibly a name. What faced him was a drawing of

an ancient Roman glass pitcher. On the side were the words --"Ennio fecit"--set in a tabula ansata.

What did all this mean? Who painted this picture of Evelyn and this unknown man. And what was this drawing of an ancient Roman glass pitcher all about. What had Evelyn been doing and with whom and where did this pitcher come from? Harvey felt cornered and felt he had come to a dead end once again.

Why was he so bewildered about Evelyn and why did he not trust about

The thoughts swirling through his mind. He hadn't seen Evelyn since she ran off with that Maltese tour guide.
