Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I just completed task 30.1:

What I Saw And How I Lied and Tamar A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal. What I saw and How I Lied won the National Book Award for 2008. I feel the award was deserved. This was a coming-of-age novel set after the end of WWII. The writing was strong and evoked the time/place in colorful detail. I liked the protagonist, fifteen year old Evie.

Tamar: a Novel of Espionage, Passion and Betrayal won the Carnegie Medal for 2005. This novel also deserved its award. This went back and forth between 1944/45 and 1995. It was both exciting and intriguing.

Task 25.2

The Glitter-Eyed Wouse, Jonreed Lauritzen (238pg)
Heart of a Champion, Carl Deuker (199 pg)

On a normal library trip I would never have picked up either book. The first was published in 1960 and clearly showed it. The second was a little too afternoon special for my taste. But good challenge none the less.

Bird (thebird) 20.2 Flush by Carl Hiaasen (272 pages)

I loved this book because it covered environmental issues in a very entertaining way, which is definitely one of Hiaasen's strengths. I think this is something all kids could benefit from reading. Everyone (both kids and adults) needs to know the effect environmental degradation has on the world.

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I finished Anne of Green Gables... I thought I had read it as a child but now I'm beginning to think I just saw the movie. Last week I was going to use Wicked Lovely as part of the series task but I decided on another series. So I am posting it as 10.2 task as it's on mor e than one group member's page with 4+ stars.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Whoopsie! Official page count: 304 (According to Amazon).

*blush* Sorry about that.

message 69: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Becky, I thought we were using the first GR copy of a title for the page count. Amazon page counts seem to be more of an estimate and are seldom accurate.

message 70: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes... we are. Except Maus didn't have one, so Laura OK'd going with the Amazon count. I'm good either way, really. :)

message 71: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Actually, I'm changing the page count. I'll use the page count from the combined book which is the one I reviewed, even though I read the two volumes separately.

So, Laura, we're going with 296 for the page count for Maus. I'm not sure if that's really what I read, but it's easier to just check GR instead of having to go to Amazon too. :)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Oh, thanks for clearing that up, Becky. Although GR page counts can always be added/updated by GR librarians so that they are accurate. Is there a reason the Maus book didn't have a page count here on GR?

been meaning to for awhile, just wasn't sure where to put it...

As is generally true, I definitely preferred the book. The movie was ok, but I would have liked it more if I hadn't read the book. They changed an INSANE amount of stuff to amp up the suspense, creating man-eating monsters that were never even hinted at in the book, along with other weird changes. Also, they in effect took away all of the hard work Doone and Lina did to get out of Ember: in the book they spend a lot of time figuring out a half-eaten map, and risk their lives to get to where the map leads. They have to experiment with things and trust themselves to be ok. In the movie, everything is hidden in plain sight in a completely unbelievable way -- there is absolutely NO way the way out wouln't have been discovered by someone before them -- hundreds of years before them. It was absurd. Read the book, but don't expect much from the movie.

message 77: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm not sure why it didn't have one originally, but when Laura OK'd the Amazon pg count, I wasn't sure which edition I'd be reading (since it can be read in two volumes or as a combined book).

It has been updated though, now. :)

message 78: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Good, Becky. Thanks! Page numbers are so easy to add - particularly when you have the book in hand and know the accurate number of pages.

Leora Completed another task, finally! Finishing up the spring challenge in another group so I am staggering my reads and it is sllllooooowwww going.

So now I have 25 points and 423 pages total.
