Ashley (affie) | 468 comments I know this isn't technically the spot for it, but:
Luann, how did you like Jackaroo? I love Cynthia Voigt, and she wrote 3 other 'Novel of a Kingdom'

The movies are probably the best you could get for such huge books and just two hours of viewing time. I still wish they had put Peeves in the movies... gotta love Peeves.

Heather, I read Ink Exchange as my book I picked randomly from the library, but I didn't know it was part of a series. Is Wicked Lovely about Aislinn?

message 212: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Technically Linda, they're calling Wicked Lovely and Fragile Eternity #1 and #2.. which is weird, but both of those two focus on Aislinn, where Ink Exchange takes off from the same world and characters but is kind of a stand alone. I know that's confusing, but yeah.

I also read, for task 20.2, Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry.

This is a companion book to The Giver, which is one of my all-time favorite books. Gathering Blue truly is a companion book, since the characters don't overlap, but the plots are so similar. Every young person (and every adult!) should read both of these books, because of what they say about society, and about individuals. They offer both a caution and hope, both things sorely needed in any society.

Gathering Blue has 240 pages.

Just completed task 30.1

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor - The Newbery Medal, USA (220 Pages) and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Mark Haddon – The Guardian Award, British (271 pages)
I have used the number of pages in the british edition, hope that this is ok.

I thought that Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry was a very well written book and very easily appriciated by children and adult and most definiately deserved the Newbery medel. The second book, even though it was very well written the story line was a little poor, so I am not sure it it was the best book that could have benn awarded the guardian award that year.

I read The Giver by Lois Lowry, winner of the Newberry Award and I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak, the winner of The Children's Book Council of Australia. Michelle | 52 comments A couple days ago I read Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster, thus completing task 30.3. The description of one of the editions of this book said that it was a modern version of Cinderella, which is why I chose it for this task. Maybe I missed it, but this didn't seem like Cinderella to me except for maybe the oh-it's-you ending.

Does this mean I have to read another modern fairytale to fulfill this task?

I really enjoyed the book, by the way.

Jamie I've decided to replace Anne of Green Gables with A Northern Light, which I just finished today, so my list of finished books so far looks like this:

30.2 A Northern Light, 380 pgs.
30.3 The Goose Girl, 400 pgs.
20.2 Anne of Green Gables, 320 pgs.

10.1 Graceling, 471 pgs.
5.4 The Last Olympian, 384 pgs.

Total: 115 pts./2291

Regarding the second parts of 30.2 and 20.2, I've just contributed to the A Northern Light thread. As for Anne of Green Gables, I think it is a great book for young people to read, due to Anne's refreshing personality and for all of the little lessons that are incorporated into the stories. This book has such a positive tone and I think kids need to understand the message that people can do well in life even if they are different. In general, I also think kids today don't use their imaginations as much as they used to. This book makes it seem like so much fun!

Just finished Warrior Princess, which I couldn't really get too into. I liked the basic plot line, but it just didn't really move me. I didn't fall in love with any of the characters.. due to some serious let-down in the characterization field and there really wasn't any great interaction between characters. I finally saw the movie Bridge to Terabithia, which lets me finish up task 20.1. I read Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson with 143 pages.

I liked the book better than the movie, because I thought the book captured the essence of the time period better than the movie, which set the movie in modern times. I liked the time period of the original, sometime around the time when hippies started appearing in America. It set up a lot of character issues that the movie couldn't get into.

Of course, the movie was interesting, but I just thought it lacked something the book had. I did like the bully character better in the movie, because she was better developed.
