Misty | 1505 comments Finished The Luxe, which, along with The Awakening and American Born Chinese completes task 25.1. I started a thread for American Born Chinese after I read it. It was probably my favorite of the three, with The Awakening a close second and The Luxe a distant third.

The Luxe: Historical 448 pages
The Awakening: Science Fiction/Fantasy 360 pages
American Born Chinese: Multicultural/Graphic Novel 240 pages

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas a couple of weeks ago but I didn't watch the movie until last night. In one of those rare instances, the movie was actually better. It was more powerful and the main character was much more believable. He was so naive in the book that I had a hard time buying it. But in the movie, he asked questions and wasnt completely oblivious. Great movie! That completes task 20.1

Michelle | 52 comments I just finished reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon for Task 20.2. I'd like my younger sister to read this book because she's really good with children with special needs and considered becoming a special ed teacher for a while. I think she would appreciate the unique main character in this book.

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I finished task 20.3, 336 pages - Alpha Dog. It took place in Texas, where I live. It was specifically in Austin and San Marcos, both of which I've been several times. Cute book!

I also read The Graveyard Book for task 10.4, 312 pages. I really hate to say this but I didn't enjoy it at all. I don't believe it deserved the Newberry Award. Sorry... I know so many of you love it. I felt it lacked in character development and had so many loose ends. The chapters felt disjointed and as if he was writing for a movie.

Jen B (jennybee618) Tasks completed (most recent in bold):

30 Point Tasks
3. Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine (GR Page Count: 240)

25 Point Tasks
1a. New Moon - Stephenie Meyer (Category: Romance) (GR Page count: 563 pages)
b. Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson (Category: Contemporary) (GR Page count: 282)

20 Point Tasks
2. The Tales of Beedle the Bard - JK Rowling (GR page count: 109 pages)
4. The Truth About Forever - Sarah Dessen (GR page count: 400 pages)
5. The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things - Carolyn Mackler (GR page count: 256 pages)

10 Point Tasks
3. The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin (GR page count: 192 pages)

5 Point Tasks
4. When You Wish - Kristin Harmel (GR page count: 288)

Still playing along, I've just been reading a lot more adult books than YA books lately. But I finished Wintergirls last night. I really enjoyed this one. It's a very honest, painful look at the effects of anorexia on one teenage girl and the people in her life. Anderson doesn't shy away from the harsh, awful truth - she tells it like it is. I think many teenage girls (and adults, for that matter) would benefit from reading this one.

No new points for me -- one book left to go for that task!

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Yesterday morning I finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird (336 pgs) and then last night I watched the movie for task 20.1. The movie was excellent and so was the book. I have to say I liked the book better because I enjoyed imagining what the characters and the town looked like. I was wrong about the way Maudie looked! The movie stayed pretty close to the book, though, and Gregory Peck did an excellent job of portraying Atticus.

Misty | 1505 comments Read The Book Thief for task 20.2 I wish I could get my brother and sister to read it, but I doubt they will (at 552 pages, it's a hard sell). Actually, I'm trying to get my mom to read it, too. It's a powerful book and it gives a new perspective on the Holocaust. Most YA WWII books take place in a concentration camp or ghetto, and are from a mostly Jewish perspective, and it's easy to forget that there were Germans against what was going on and faced traumatic experiences of their own, even if on a smaller scale.

Cassie (cassielo) I love A Separate Peace too. What was lame when I read it in high school was that it was assigned summer reading for the boys' classes, and the girls got something like Wolf by the Ears (classes were separated for the first two years). I would have never read it if my brother hadn't been assigned it, and it's one of my favorite books.

20.5 The Sweet Far Thing

10.4 The Knife of Never Letting Go
I'm not sure I think this book deserved the award because I haven't read any of the other books on this list. I thought the book started really slowly, but made up for it by the middle and then a strong end.
