At least, that's what I am doing every time I see anything about When.

The assumption is no later than sometime in 2015.

message 5: by Karen (new)

Karen | 53 comments Is it unreasonable to think 2014? Pat himself said he was hoping for this...

http://archeddoorway.com/2012/11/15/a...

It's far from definitive, however, it gives me hope!

message 6: by Amber, Master Sympathist (new)

Amber (ivorydoom) | 1471 comments Mod
No it's not unreasonable to think 2014, I heard him say that in a recent interview as well, but it was followed by him saying "latest 2015". So I just go with the latest date to avoid dissapointment.

Chris (chris300) | 388 comments Mod
We just have to wait and see. Pat has said multiple times he won't give an estimated date after he moved back TWMF so many times and got angry ungrateful fans. lol

message 8: by Beth (new)

Beth (bethd) | 28 comments I am glad that I didn't discover these books until recently. I'd hate to have to wait longer than two years for the third book!

I know. I only found the series when TWMF came out. My brother read them when NOTW came out. I'd be frothing at the bit by now!

Brian | 2 comments Thanks everyone who posted. At least now I have dates to look forward to.

Reads with Scotch | 178 comments I try to let authors work at their own pace… but after the Jordan debacle, and the developing Martin debacle, I find I’m a little gun shy. I still have a favorable opinion of, Rothfuss and hope to maintain it. However I see a lot of side projects and merchandizing going on. Nothing wrong with making a coin off of your intellectual property, But could you try focusing a bit on the book. Tjhanks.

Well said I agree completely. Reminds me of the recent stanley cup playoffs when Chicago captain Jonathan Toews wasn't putting up many points and everyone was saying how many other things he was contributing like defense and leadership. During the finals they were down 2 games to 1 and while sitting around on some downtime teammate Brent Seabrooke asked Toews what he was thinking about and he said "nothing". Seabrooke stared at him intensely until Toews finally snapped out of it and said "Right. Scoring Goals!" Next game he got a goal and an assist.

I know Pat is doing many important things but what is important is scoring goals. (writing books) We appreciate it all, but really books are the important thing which leads to everything else being possible.

message 13: by Brandon (new)

Brandon | 74 comments Please don't GRR Martin it PR. I can't bare to wait that long for both series.

message 14: by Jumana (new)

Jumana | 2 comments IMO, there is no way Doors of Stone will be done by 2014. But that's okay, since it is definetly the last book and not the next one in an ever expanding series. By 2016, some kind of resolution to the story will be reached.

message 15: by Amber, Master Sympathist (new)

Amber (ivorydoom) | 1471 comments Mod
I don't know, Pat has said more than once now he's hoping for 2014.

Thats nearly a year and a half, so...it wouldn't surprise me if he made it through, I just keep the 2015 date in my mind so I don't get over excited.

Also - it's only the last book in Kvothe's story, it's actually highly likely it is just the next one in an ever expanding series related to the 4 Corners Universe.
He hasn't even introduced us to over half the map....

message 16: by Lucas (new)

Lucas | 18 comments Has Pat said that he's hoping for 2014 more than once now? The Arched Doorway interview simply mentions that he implied this in that (excellent) Triangulation interview.

Excuse me I misspoke.
I also read it on the wikipedia article, not an actual interview.

Fairly positive that is real. I seen the google+ post myself and looked really closely to see what the top sheet said.

Only bothered reading part of though since it was so tiny AND it didn't really say anything in relation to the actual story.

Hopefully this links work, it will/should take you to the photo from his confirmed Google+ site.

EDIT: Okay that didn't work, but it is on his page which you can go to by following the link.

message 21: by Meran (new)

Meran With some of these authors, I just wonder what would happen if they passed on... Yeah, it's selfish of me; BUT... If I wrote, I'd HATE to leave a partial book or worse, "finished by someone else" book behind me!

And SO many authors, GOOD ONES, manage to put very good novels out one per year. That way, the money keeps coming in :)

So, obviously, money is not an issue :/

oh, I don't know....tell him the dog knows where he lives and if he values his life he will finish book 3 post haste?

Meran ROTFLMAO!

That's my Marigold, a Pom, in her "Mrs Growley" act my husband taught her.

And he gets so much mail.... She'd get lost.

But you're funny! Gave us both a belly laugh!

message 25: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (honeybeesbookishthings) | 1 comments I started reading these when NOTW came out. It's been a long while but it's worth it. I've heard late 2014 early 2015. I've read some of his comics and stuff. So just remember this is one trilogy in a huge series of books he's planning to write. Give the man some time.....it is probably hard to end this particular journey.

message 26: by Jason (new)

Jason (jzone) | 79 comments Bianca wrote: "So just remember this is one trilogy in a huge series of books he's planning to write..."

I'm not highly optimistic on your expectations of "huge". Best case scenario he lives into his 80's and beyond and seems to write a book every 5 years. That's only around another 9 books or 3 more trilogies. Not so huge, but I probably won't live to see the last few anyways :)

message 27: by Meran (new)

Meran Jason, you make my point eloquently ;)

Pat isn't that old guys, he probably won't die unless it's a freak accident. Even then, we'd still likely get DOS as it's all just editing now. So you can relax.

LOL.

Also, he might write you back if you sent him a nice letter. I have sent him a letter talking about the music in the story and asking about Ademre, to which he responded to in less than a month and even gave me a pretty cool postcard that had drawings of a bunch of the characters and he had signed it as well.

message 30: by Meran (new)

Meran I don't think we're 'worried' about him dying before DOS... just in general.

We DO like his writing. I bet we're hoping he learns to work just a little faster... maybe 4 years instead of 5 for a book ;) I paint. If I took 5 years to do a painting, I'd have to ask 5 yrs of income for that one painting. OR sell an awful lot of prints ;)

Today, I, Amber the good Fairy, Grant your wish.
BAHAHAHA!

He hasn't taken 5 years to publish a book in the series. Well, unless you count his initial attempts before anyone ever knew who he was.

Even if we wait until 2015 that is still only 4 years.
Name of the Wind was published in 2007 and Wise Man's Fear was published in 2011, actually 1 month before it would have been exactly 4 years. It's only been two years and 3 months since we last recieved a full length novel.

message 32: by Meran (new)

Meran I guess I should have gone downstairs and gotten my books out. Instead I believed one of the 'facts' I've heard around Goodreads.

My bad.

So. Change my times to 1 yr LESS than what he's done previously. You know, when I sell artwork, the most common question is this one: "How long did it take you to do?"

No one ever asks an author that. And you can see why. ;) No one likes to be embarrassed.

message 33: by Jason (last edited Jul 08, 2013 05:34PM) (new)

Jason (jzone) | 79 comments Sorry Meran, never meant to put it out there as a "fact", but it is my best guess. Amber seems to forget that the entire trilogy was finished before NotW was released. Yes there were some tweaks and fixes etc. but if it takes 4 years to release the next book that is essentially finished, I think estimating 5 years a book after DoS is reasonable. Realistically it could be much higher actually. So there lol

P.S. - Meran, do you have any examples of your art online? Love to give it a browse. Cheers.

message 34: by Chris, Master Artificer (new)

Chris (chris300) | 388 comments Mod
I don't think she did forget Jason. That is a pretty poor bit of fact, it's true he finished the draft years ago but said draft didn't feature a lot of the, now main, characters such as Devi or Denna. It will take a lot of re-writing to fit them in and fact checking etc.

I'm like you though, it's only been 2 years but feels like 10 :'( lol

message 35: by Amber, Master Sympathist (new)

Amber (ivorydoom) | 1471 comments Mod
It's no problem Meran, I wasn't trying to be a jerk or embarass you, I just know a lot of people proliferate the idea that it's taking him "SO LONG" when it really isn't and it gets others going who don't have the time to go around double checking everything they hear or are new to the series and just don't know where to look.

@Jason
Nope, didn't forget. As Chris said, what he had finished was a rough draft and outline of what he wanted in the novel. It was not word for word or anywhere near complete novel/series, it was a complete idea is more like it. It didn't include any of the Auri, Bredon, or Devi parts. It also did not include the frame, meaning there was no Bast, Chronicler, or Townies.
There was no Kote. There was No Thrice Locked Chest.

Thats a lot of add in, plus fact checking, plus subplots, plus intertwining all of this into the main plot....

Though I do agree, that not expecting him to produce anything new within 5 years is probably a safe bet. Though I do expect he will publish the Bast novella before that....so....now I'm just contridicting myself so I'm going to shut up.

message 36: by Meran (new)

Meran Oh, heck, there's going to be a Bast novella? When? Where? In what collection? ;)

I really hate complaining about authors, especially when the work is high quality, like Rothfuss's is! And I understand the tweaking. Him being young though worries me... He's setting his habits now for when he's older. Every 5 years doesn't keep ME in Rothfuss Crack, you know? ;)

My art: I'm also remodeling and battling health issues, so "my website" isn't up... I'm on Facebook though and a very small amount of work I've done is there, for those who are interested. I'm not good at people, but I like animals, landscapes, skyscapes, still lifes. If you can't find me there, PM me here. And thanks for the interest! (please forgive the low dpi images. Also, you'll know it's me by the orange glass banner. I made the bowl shown for author Cat Valente. Who, btw, is an excellent author who writes like the wind! She definitely keeps me full of Valente Crack! ;) )

Yep, eventually there will be. He hasn't released the information of how it will be published yet. At first it was intended for an anthology but it has grown large enough to be a novella so I guess it's kinda up in the air.
I'm sure we'll get a blog post when it's ready for preorder or about to publish.

But I'm really looking forward to it.
Have you by chance picked up Unfettered? He just published a new 4 Corners story in it. Very vague but enjoyable, especially the last part.

Plus it had a lot of other great authors in it as well, I read some of the stories last night and haven't found a single one dissapointing yet.

I get my Rothfuss fix from the Blog. I L.O.V.E. KKC but I just enjoy Rothfuss' writing altogether, so reading the blog is a nice way to get it. I'm also really looking forward to the Comic he is doing for Tides of Numenera. I trust it will be a good story.

(How should we find you on facebook? I'd love to check out your work, I'm a bit of an artist myself and networking is always great. It's a side thing for me, but makes extra money when needed.)

message 38: by Meran (new)

Meran just got Unfettered ;) No time to read it just yet (I have about 20 books in play, most of them need reviews, have already been read ;) )

Just Meran (ni Cuill)
I'm probably the only Meran, it's an unusual name... plus the big orange glass bowl banner :D

What kind of art are you up to? I do ATC size work, love oil pastels (try THAT at 2.5 x 3.5 inches!), some acrylic, but working into larger oils. I like to think that my small works are 'studies' for the larger ones. Also am planning on doing all my pets, past and present, for my own walls. I miss them. Networking is good :D

I just got my copy too. I've only had a chance to read the forward and Pat's story, it's really short.
But I know exactly what you mean, I have a stack staring me down as well LOL!

I will look you up. That sounds cool. I have actually never done ATC size work, I probably couldn't! LOL, that is way tiny, gotta be hard when doing a detailed piece, so kudos.

I take commissions usually when I need cash, which often means I don't choose the medium or the content of the painting. But I prefer to work in acrylic if I get to choose because it is a medium I can work fast in and dries so much quicker than oils LOL. I'm left handed so I'm an awful smudger. I've been getting a good bit of work doing art for peoples boards around my parts, Longboarding is pretty popular in my area. Another artist friend of mine has been killing me with his Airbrush work though! LOL. Gotta love a little competition amongst friends.
My originals are usually abstracts in acrylic with lots of color and layers, I tend to do medium sized pieces but have also done a few murals in the past. I like to change it up every now and then and do portraits or still lifes in color pencil as well, but I'm versed in just about everything.

Meran Amber, friend me and I'll "accept" ;)
I have lot f ATC work from when I began in 2007... So you can see how I got better (thank heavens! :) )

I like tiny. I get more detail than you'd think. Find "Scary Sammy" (you might even be able to just search that on google. I did a backlit kitten in 5 different colors of colored pencil.

I don't do airbrush. I tried it, not bad, but it doesn't "sing" to me...

Sweet. I will check it out. Sounds cool.

I think Airbrushing certainly looks nice, but I like a lot more texture in my work than airbrush can usually offer.

NOT MY BELOVED KKC TOO!!

However, on other regards, woo hoo for Pat. Means he can keep making money and writing books that I am sure to love.
