Vanity Fair by a landslide.

Happy Reading!

Sorry for the delay. Busy week at my house. I was thinking of you, just not at the right times. :)

Kathryn | 361 comments Perhaps this will finally get me to read it, especially since I have all summer to do so! :-)

Angie | 512 comments This is great! I really enjoyed last summer's read. Has it been a year?

Elizabeth (Miss Eliza) (strange_misseliza) | 144 comments Well...though I didn't really like this book at least when people are done we can discuss the awesome Andrew Davies mini-series!

I found a free copy a week ago and snagged it hoping it would be the summer choice. Yay, serendipity!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) yay! I just found this at a book sale and definitely plan on reading with the group!

Kristi (kristilarson) It's on my Kindle!

message 8: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Exciting! As it has been taking me a good while to get through some of our choices, I am glad we have all summer for this read!

Deborah | 283 comments I like the fact that we have three months to give to this, especially since May's book (K&C for short) is really pretty long with lotso talking points.

Kathryn | 361 comments Did anyone watch the Reese Witherspoon movie? I admit that I did not like it much at all and it probably put me off reading the book after I saw it! :-/ Thankfully, since I didn't really like it, I've forgotten almost everything so when/if I DO read it, I'll be surprised! (And hopefully pleasantly so since books are so much better than the film versions!)

Elizabeth (Miss Eliza) (strange_misseliza) | 144 comments That movie was AWFUL! It's like they never read the book, or even the cliff notes! They missed the whole point, unlike the BBC miniseries, which I thought did a really good job. I mean the movie set out to make Becky Sharp a heroine....um, not what Thackery was doing....once everyone starts reading it we can have a big gripe fest :)

I'm still trying to get over the fact that Becky had a hint of a southern accent. Ordinarily I like Reese, but ... Sheesh! ;)

The movie was that bad huh? I've had the DVD for ages but haven't watched it in the hopes that someday I might want to read the book first. Guess I should!

Elizabeth (Miss Eliza) (strange_misseliza) | 144 comments OK, it's not that it's bad per say, as I backtrack for the awful of earlier (it's awful to me, yes, but I'll preface it in a way). The thing is that it like missed the boat on what the author was trying to say and therefore made me mad, and made me hate it. If you had no idea about the book or that the book existed or that people in England aren't supposed to have slightly Southern accents, hey, maybe you'd like it. It's like me and my overwhelming hatred of the Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor, as a friend of mine said "It's a good movie if you don't think of it as Austen."

message 15: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 361 comments Ah, well, I am glad that it veered so far from the book--then I might actually like the book! ;->

message 16: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (vorvesm) | 19 comments I actually liked the movie, but as Elizabeth said, I had no idea the book was out there. I also just always try (after I've read the book AND watched the movie) to realize that it's never going to fully come up to my standards, so I just have to remember it's BASED on the book. That way, even if it strays REALLY far from the book, I can still enjoy the movie too as it's own entity.
That said, I'm very excited that this is the summer read!

The BBC's Vanity Fair is the way to go! I didn't hate the Mira Nair version, but it definetely veered from the original author's intent (why?) It's all about sets and costumes.

Elizabeth (Miss Eliza) (strange_misseliza) | 144 comments Plus Phillip Glenister pre Gene Hunt!

*Sigh.* Gene Hunt is dreamy. :D

Elizabeth (Miss Eliza) (strange_misseliza) | 144 comments Even better in Ashes to Ashes then Life on Mars, if he'd only let me ride around in his Quatro with him....

Is this the only book we will read for the summer or will we do a monthly shorter book also? thanxs.

Dharma, this is our only book for summer. But you can talk about other books in the Other Book Discussions thread.
