Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments In past summers, for decades really, I have looked forward to lazy days of summer with a good book and a light breeze from a fan, air conditioning or outdoors in the shade. This summer for a good number of people in the US West, the only option appears to be a super charged air conditioning system. Yikes, the temperatures. Stay safe out there, folks! Dan and Merilee and anyone else experiencing these ridiculous high temperatures, this is making temperatures in the 90's seem cool to me (and that is saying something!)

Merrilee in AZ | 1121 comments It is hot and the fires are bad. We lost 19 firefighters in this last fire

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I was so sad to hear about those firefighters. What a terrible thing. They lost some a couple of years ago here in CO when we were having bad fires on the Western Slope. Most of the mountain & foothills towns here in CO have cancelled fireworks for the 4th. Hope some morons shooting off their own stuff don't cause any fires. I'll be keeping a close watch here in our neighborhood as we have lots of morons and are surrounded by very dry open fields.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments The Fires are really bad, Merrilee. So scary. I hate that the danger from those has resulted in the tragic loss of firefighter's lives and the loss of so much acreage and property. Please be safe. and know we are thinking about you and worrying.

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments If the deaths of the Hot Shot crew could be any worse, it's that they were unique in that they were all from one fire department - the Prescott Fire Department. Almost 25% of the department was lost in this incident, and the fire is still zero percent contained with the loss of many homes.

Dan and Merrilee, this news has been devastating. I didn't know they were all from Prescott, Dan. What courage, but an unbelievable loss.

Brakedrum | 1203 comments Heat, yes, Heat. Fred and I just returned from a roadtrip covering Texas to Missouri. We then began our ride from Missouri to Texas following Route 66 thru small towns and unusual sites along the way. Met local people trying to preserve the route. We also met a couple from Belfast, Ireland. They were totally unprepared for the heat, most days were over 100 degrees, riding on a motorcycle with a helmet on is tough, but that's what we all did. They rode with us for over 5 hours. Belfast's average summer temp. is in the upper 60's to lower 70's. We shared our canteen of water with them. I tried to explain it's critical to carry water and not rely on gas stations for bottled water. You need it to take a break in a shady area or if you break down. I told them to pick up a canteen at Walmart(around 4 dollars) fill it with ice at the motel in the a.m. and the water will be icy into the late afternoon. I hope they took my advice, for riding in over 100 degrees can be deadly. I've known passengers passing out. Also told them about wetting a shirt while riding. It only lasts for a while, but does provide relief from the relentless sun. They were planning on riding all the way to California, turn in the rental Harley, and catch a flight back to Ireland on July 9th. We exchanged emails, so I will write them when they get back home. I just hope they do okay, they still had to go thru New Mexico, Arizona and California. The temps. are well over 100 degrees. I have a case of heatrash on my right leg and both upper arms.
So sorry to hear about those brave firefighters. Heard it on the news while we were on the trip.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments Lorraine: Good to know you and Fred enjoyed the trip and stayed safe in the heat, hope the friends from Ireland do the same. It sounds like the heat was brutal (and more to come)
