June 21st is the Summer Solsitce. We thought it would be fun to read a book centered around witches for our group read in June.

Rules for submissions:
1. One recommendation per member
2. The book needs to still be in print & readily available.
3. Needs to fit the theme of witches

We will be accepting nominations through May 18th then put up a poll until 5/22. That will give everyone just over a week to get their books before June.

Recommendations for June's Witch book:
1. Blood Engines by T.A. Pratt -- Marla Manson series book 1
2. Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier -- Stand Alone
3. The Wages of Sin by Jenna Maclaine -- Cin Craven series book 1
4. Tall, Dark & Dead by Tate Hallaway -- Garnett Lacy series book 1
5. Witch Fire by Anya Bast -- Elemental Witches series book 1
6. Forbidden Magic by Cheyenne McCray -- Magic series book 1
7. Dark Watcher by Lilith Saintcrow -- Watcher series book 1
8. The Good, the Bad, and the Undead by Kim Harrison -- The Hollows series book 2

I'm going to suggest Blood Engines by T.A. Pratt. It's about a witch that is in search of a powerful artifact in order to protect her city from a rival. From the reviews it seems to be an Urban-Fantasy with a little bit of a darker streak.

Bonus - it's available in stores and FREE as a pdf right here on GoodReads :)

Kristen Harvey Wildwood Dancing is my suggestion.

Hey Kristen does Wildwood Dancing have Witches in it?
just wondering..... :)

message 5: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Well I haven't read it, but in the description it says "The Wildwood is a magical place ruled by Draguta, "the witch of the wood.'" So I just assumed...

here is my Suggestion for the June Book.

Wages of Sin Cin Craven book 1 by Jenna Maclaine

The first book in the Cin Craven series, set in 1815.

Dulcinea Craven descends from a long line of witches, and she has just inherited wild, untrained magical powers that she has no idea how to control. Now a ruthless vampire and an age-old demon are determined to enslave Cin and steal her power for their own. Her only hope is The Righteous, a band of warrior vampires who slay the rogue undead. Among them is Michael, a fierce swordsman who inflames Cin’s most primal hungers. Showing her a sensual pleasure beyond anything in the mortal realm, she must choose between the human existence she has always known, and immortality as a vampire—a new life filled with forbidden urges, dark yearning, and unearthly passions…

i had trouble picking just one book.. there is at least 3 to 4 witch books i want to read.. :)

Ahh - we didn't see that in the description. Sounds good. Maybe the witch is even the bad guy - might be a good change of pace from the vamps, weres & witches usually being romanticized.

over all it sounds like a good book Kristen... :) good suggestion

Melodie (melodieco) Tate Hallaway's books would qualify for this theme, if you haven't read them.

Hey Melody - Is there any of her books in particular you would like to suggest for our June Group Read?

Tall, Dark & Dead is the first one. If most people have read that the 2nd one is Dead Sexy.

Jessi (jessim) Witch Fire by Anaya Bast sound really interesting.

message 13: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) I've read Blood Engines and the rest of T(im) A Pratts Marla series so far, their pretty good. It is urban fantasy and marlas a toughy. Shes a kick ass kinda girl, or in other words, my kinda girl. I may choose this one.

I've also read Wages of Cin. It is a paranormal romance. I wasnt that wild about it, but have heard lots of folks whos opinion I respect rave about it. I I think folks here would enjoy it. I am undecided about the other three you have suggested.

I like the title Wildwood Dancing but havent been too wild about that authors other books I have read.

Huh. I'll think a little longer on this.

I read Wages Of Sin and didn't care for it either. But then I'm not nuts about most romances and don't like the time period.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 35 comments Cheyenne McCray's Magic series is about witches, too. The first book is called Forbidden Magic.

I KNOW! I'm going to have a hard time choosing again - there's a lot listed that I want to read.

message 18: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey It's always hard for me to choose and I always look at what other people are voting for. :)

message 19: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) Lilith Saintcrow's Watcher series is about witches. The first in the series is Dark Watcher. It was good and I read it last month so its fresh enough I wouldnt mind talking about it if others are interested.

I enjoyed Dark Watcher and the rest of the series too. It is a little different spin on witches and the dark things that chase them. A great book! I'm waiting to find out when the 6th one will be released.

I noticed that the poll was closed - assumably since midnight tonight - I meant to have it open through today so it is reopened. If you tried to vote this morning I'm sorry you weren't able to but you should be able to now.

Looking at the polls - it looks like we're going to have a clear winner this month. I din't vote for the book but it's on my to read list so I'm excited!!! We'll annouce the official winner tomorrow, just in case we get a lot of votes today.
