Lori Well, so RA and I were both reading our Newsweeks today, and I find it amusing that the story that I found most exciting, RA probably didn't even to bother to read. Cat Stevens is back to music. Yep, I ADORED Cat Stevens, so what of it? Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Aside from that, I found this article fascinating as he seems to have found peace within himself. I like what he has to say about Islam too...

Dave Russell I'm excited about it.

message 3: by Lori (new)

Lori I love the way he says that with the way he looks now he no longer has to worry about being a sex icon.

Well, Cat, all of us who ogled you then are older now as well. :D

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Oh so many favorites. Trouble. I also loved Mona Bone Jakone - Lilywhite, Lady D'arbanville. So many.

10 years ago I bought Tea for the Tillerman on CD, and listened to Father and Son for the first time in a looooong time. I could so clearly remember my teenage self listening to it, outraged by everything the Father said, and yet this time I had to admit that what he was saying was really quite reasonable.

Sarah | 13814 comments I heard a couple of songs off of the album he put out in 2006 "An Other Cup", which was heralded as a return to form -they were okay. Nothing that could even hold a candle to Tea for the Tillerman.

One of our summer outdoor filmfests showed Harold & Maude last year. We watched it on a green and grassy hillside, with everybody singing along. That was lots of fun.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I can't think of Cat Stevens without thinking of how much I hate early 70s singer songwriters.

Matthieu | 1009 comments My pure hatred of Coldplay frequently clouds my judgement.

Leslie | 777 comments I was dissappointe in Another Cup--I was expecting more of what I always loved so much and it wasn't there--just ok, like Sara said. I was so in love with him when I was in high school!! I love his music, still listen to it a lot. One of my top favorites of all time, forever!

Leslie | 777 comments Isn't it Father and Son that has the line--"You're still young, that's your fault"? As much as I love Cat Stevens, I always found that line very strange. What could be less our fault than the year we were born? And the same song, I think, has one of my favorite lines--"Ever since I learned to talk, I was ordered to listen." I love that--so true.

What do you guys think of the song O Very Young? I love it, but in the song he says that to him, she'll always be a child. When I really listened to it, I thought, that's why she has to leave him--(Cause my original thought was who would be crazy enough to leave Cat Stevens?) But she has to leave him to grow up and be an adult. She can't stay with someone who treats her like a perpetual child.

His songs have given me a lot to think about. They're so deep. Other than maybe the one about Applegas--or whatever it is. If that one's deep, it's so deep it went way over my head.

message 19: by Ivy (new)

Ivy (theafricangourmet) Cat Stevens, never heard of him but this whole Cat Stevens vs. Coldplay feud is interesting

message 20: by Lori (new)

Lori Leslie - the line is That's not your fault.

And the verses to O Very Young (because I had to check, I didn't remember):

Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
Youre only dancing on this earth for a short while
And though your dreams may toss and turn you now
They will vanish away like your daddys best jeans
Denim blue fading up to the sky
And though you want them to last forever
You know they never will
You know they never will
And the patches make the goodbye harder still

Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
Therell never be a better chance to change your mind
And if you want this world to see a better day
Will you carry the words of love with you
Will you ride the great white bird into heaven
And though you want to last forever
You know you never will
You know you never will
And the goodbye makes the journey harder still

Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
Youre only dancing on this earth for a short while
Oh very young
What will you leave us this time

Sarah | 13814 comments Leslie - I think Wild World is what you're thinking of...

message 22: by Lori (new)

Lori Ahhhhhh, just goes to show the way I interpreted that line! Just like you did, Ko, being young is NOT your fault, it just is.

message 23: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I agree with Ko. He's not affixing blame -- just naming the problem at hand (being too young).

message 24: by Sarah (last edited May 06, 2009 11:02AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ko - I was responding to Leslie's other question, about the lyric that isn't in "O Very Young".
The lyric she referred to was "I'll always remember you like a child, girl" -- which is in "Wild World", not "O Very Young".

message 25: by Lori (new)

Lori Ha!

I think we're talking about three songs at once. We need to untangle the thread.

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Okay, Sarah, you take that end, and I'll pull on this end.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments ...o very wild father and tea for the...
Hmm. No good. It's just getting more tangled.

...where do the children sing out...

Uh oh...

message 29: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Here. Use these scissors.

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'm being followed by a moon.

No good. I cut in the wrong place.

message 31: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Maybe just wad it up in a ball and start over?

message 32: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Good thinking.

Leslie | 777 comments
I seems to have started a big tangle on here, kind of like a pile-up on an interstate on a foggy morning.

Ok, that makes sense, the line about being remembered as a child is in Wild World, not O Very Young.

So the line is "it's your fault" and not "it's not your fault"?
It's not like I thought the father was accusing the son of something bad, it just seemed so strange to me, such a strange way of wording something. I think it's not your fault works better, too bad we weren't there to brainstorm with him while he wrote the song, huh? :)

message 34: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments By the way, who's Coldplay? Do they sound anything like Cat Stevens?

message 35: by Félix (new)

So what was the deal with Cat Stevens anyway? He left the country, then changed his name, then they wouldn't let him back in after 9/11? What? Now he's changed it back?

message 37: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I don't believe he changed his name back from Yusuf Islam (unless it said it further down the article than I read), but he is gaining popularity again.

He was denied entrance to the US because of a mistaken identity, a mispronunciation of his name compared to someone on their list. Because of this fiasco he was also put on the FBI's To-Watch list. He is now able to come back into the states.

I'm not really familiar with his music, but I think his peace-keeping efforts are amazing. I also love the fact that he is showing a different side to muslims, in that the Koran isn't all about retribution & violence, that it is a big proponent of peace as well.

I dig this quote of his:
"In Islam there is something called the principle of common good. What that means is that whenever one is confronted by something that is not mentioned in the scriptures, one must observe what benefit it can bring. Does it serve the common good, does it protect the spirit, and does it serve God? If the scholars see that it is something positive, they may well approve of what I'm doing."
—Yusuf Islam

message 38: by Lori (new)

Lori I also like what he said about changing his feelings about music itself, and realizing that his ideology, like many these days, was too rigid. That many strict modern practices these days are pretty much based on nothing from the original practices of Islam.

message 39: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments That is cool. I think there are too many misperceptions about Islam beliefs. What (little) I know of the Koran is that it sounds beautiful.

message 40: by Lori (new)

Lori Wow, that is interesting Ko! I had heard nothing at all about this, it makes me a bit sad that, as many recent converts, he might have been so fevered.

message 41: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell when I'm really tired I can kind of see the charm of surrendering to an authoritarian philosophy

Don't do it Donna. Don't become a Republican.

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I just can't read this topic title without singing that song...

BUUUUUUUUUUUUT the cat came back, the very next day
Oh the cat came back
We thought it was a goner
but the cat came back
He just couldn't stay away

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments The Salman Rushdie issue was why 10000 Maniacs took their cover of "Peace Train" off of later pressings of their album In My Tribe.

message 44: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I think it's wonderful that he's evolved spiritually to the point that he thinks of his music as something good instead of something bad. When he first converted, he tried to have all his music removed from circulation and sale, but the contract with the record company didn't give him the power to do that. What a loss that would have been. I'm glad that's he now thinks of his music as something good, because I sure think it is.
I also heard that he's been giving over half the royalties he's gotten over the years to different charities.
I'm glad he's decided to share his gift with the world again.

message 45: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Cat Stevens was on Colbert tonight. I guess he's billing himself as just Yusuf now. Anyway, personally he seems pretty boring, but he still has the talent. He was amazing.

Leslie | 777 comments So has anyone got the cd yet? I have--it's called Roadsinger and it is good! Very good! I've been listening to it over and over since I got it--it's so nice to get some more songs from my old companion from so long ago. He has this amazing song about Noah. It's first person, like he is Noah and it give me chills. And a love song. I hope he keeps putting more music out. He's still got the gift.
