A place to dicuss the book without spoilers.

Just started this one this morning.

I'm kind of 'meh' on it so far...

It's yet another book where the plot hinges around the characters keeping important secrets from each other, and yet another book where Isaac Newton is supposed to be the founder of some important branch of magic...

I know the historical Newton was interested in alchemy, but I've seen that plot device used too many times recently to do anything but yawn.

Is this book supposed to be based on a particular fairy tale? I'm about 1/3 of the way into it so far and I haven't spotted anything.

I have not started Ruby Red yet, so I can't comment, however I did wonder the same thing, what fairy tale, when I read the description.

I think for future group reads we will have to make it clearer that the books nominated should have some kind of Fairy Tale, Mythology or Legends in them, be it in the original from, a book about Fairy Tales, a re-telling or a realistic novel with a Fairy Tale or Mythic theme to it. After all, this is a group for Fairy Tales, Mythology, Folklore and Legends!
I personally voted for Runemarks

I voted for Runemarks too... (Well, actually, I voted for something else first, then switched my vote to Runemarks when it became obvious my first pick wasn't going to win.)

I was curious about the fairy tale motifs in Ruby Red when it was nominated, but I figured they must have known more about it than I did since I hadn't heard of it before.

By the way -- I finished it, and I'm still "meh."

There are no Fairy Tale motifs that I can find however there is the legend of the Philosopher's stone in it. I started it a few days ago and think it is a fun read, but not deeply moving.

I would buddy read Runemarks with you. I think some others in this group might read it too.

I'm sure I'll get around to Runemarks eventually -- I really liked her Chocolat. Right now though, I'd be more interested in a de Lint buddy read.

Leah (flying_monkeys) | 1009 comments Ugh, it seems I was mislead by those in local book club. I asked both ladies today if they could clarify the fairy tale and they couldn't (grrr). My apologies to everyone! I assumed based on our (local club) topic of the month (several months ago) being fairy tales and them recommending Ruby Red that it was indeed fairy tale, folklore, myth related in some way. That and the title/cover. I don't normally read an entire book description or reviews until after I finish a book; I pick mainly on title, author, keywords and/or cover. Sometimes I add it to my list purely on a recommendation. After reading your remarks above and reading the back cover, I now wonder what the heck they were thinking when they recommended it for fairy tales that month?! Again, my apologies. I'll definitely dig deeper next time I nominate a group read.

No apologies necessary Leah! We can never really know what a book is like until we read it! Ruby Red did look promising and I am actually enjoying it. I am sure it others will too, so no worries.

Elley Murray (elleyotter) I looked at Ruby Red and immediately thought "Fairy tale book, wheee!" and then... no, not so much. Not at all, actually. Dang.

I agree... No apologies necessary! All we can know about a book before we read it is what others tell us.

There's been quite a few books I've nominated for group reads that I've regretted afterwords.
