Why I Can’t Stop Starting Books

From the article: "Friends say that I suffer from a short attention span, but exactly the opposite is true. I do not stop reading books because I lose interest in them; if anything, I have too long an attention span, one that allows me to read dozens of books simultaneously without losing interest in any of them."

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9490 comments Wow, impressive! I do have a number of books I've started and intend to pick up again, in fact so many I forget what they are. Not active though, since in some cases it's been years since I read anything in them.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments Ann! That's amazing! Sometimes I will read four or five. But it feels really good when you finish them :)

Shomeret | 1490 comments I've had to renew books recently which is against my policy, but I really wanted to finish them. When I do that I put them at the bottom of the Library TBR, so I don't consider them current reads even though I've started reading them. I'll continue each renewed book when it reaches the top of the pile.

I only have two current reads. My print (usually from the library) read and my Kindle read.

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments No way could I read more than a few at the same time and only if they were of different types, i.e. one mystery, one biography, one historical fiction, etc. Even that would be extremely rare for me.

message 6: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I usually have 3 going at a time. Have a couple from back in the winter that I started but didn't finish. I took them off my currently reading list, tho!

message 7: by Merrilee in AZ (new)

Merrilee in AZ | 1121 comments I really can only read one at a time. I want to enjoy the experience lol

message 8: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments I can read 2 at a time unless one is way better than the other. Also they must be different genres like romance and mystery or mystery and historical fiction.

I used to be a one at a time reader too, Merrilee, and then I got my Kindle. Kindle's a better idea on mass transit. So now I'm reading a print book at home and a Kindle book on the bus, train or plane. The current choices are a hardcover anthology of short stories at home and an e-novel on mass transit.

BarryP (barrypz) | 3498 comments I'll read a few books at a time, especially if I think I can get away with carrying around a paperback. Not 25 of them though.

message 11: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments Ok, the twenty-five are not all "active-active", though I can happily pick them up and read a few pages and then wait weeks before I return to most them, similar to you, Carol.
If the count was quantified by being read within the last week, my current count is closer to ten, but quantified on a single day: it would only be three or maybe two. I always have a print library and an audio book going, one for the car one for home; and now with the Kindle app I can have several in progress and with me at all times, one Kindle book at least that I am reading daily. Right now I am reading a different one on my Fire, Paperwhite and phone. I am addicted!

message 12: by Carol/Bonadie (last edited Jul 21, 2013 05:40AM) (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9490 comments I usually have one HC,one or two audios (one for each device, did I mention that I recently bought an iPod Nano to add to my Shuffle option?) and one on the Kindle that I can also read on my iPad with the Kindle app. Usually at least two of these are m/t, one is nonfiction or romance/romantic suspense/romantic fantasy. If it's within the same genre I don't want similar sub-genres -- British police procedural, thriller, horror, American modern day detective etc.. Needless to say I will NOT be reading Reacher and Puller at the same time, LOL.

message 13: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments I love my little Nano too, Carol! It can hold a ton of audio books. (Which are huge files!) I always have one audio cued up on it as well as my music. One of the few places I can have all of my music without space issues. The Nano is on the clock radio in the house. My Sansa Clip+ has a different audio book and is in the car. I mainly use my iPhone for my audio books, so three back-up options!

message 14: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I use my Sansa a lot too...if I can download a book from the library. I use it when I work out at the "Y".

message 15: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments I agree, Susie: The Sansa Clip+ is the perfect size for a workout, so light and easy to carry!
Good for chores too (when I feel Ike it) lol Carol!

LOL. I'll take that small victory, Ann!

Lynne in PA/Lineepinee (lineepineeaolcom) | 68 comments In the old days I had at least 2 books going at once, different genres. These days I can only get to one at a time. I must add that I have several books on my Fire that are 13% or 29% lol.

message 18: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 1490 comments Re books on your Fire at 13% or 29%-- How long have they been at those percentages? If they've been like that for months, I would look at the possibility that I'm never going to get back to them and that I should consider them abandoned. If that's the case, I would delete them.

message 19: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4354 comments okay the question should be what aren't I reading. LOL.
if it's off to the side for the time being it can still count I guess. I usually try to do one in regular DT/pb/hc whatever you want to call it and usually 2 or 3 or more are going on the nook. if it's a heavy duty book like a f2f book grp one I'll also have a romance or something light or spicy and then whatever arc I'm reading to review for the shore bookstore then something else in regular book form. I was keeping a list so I knew what I had going current/off to the side on the nook since I always seem to forget the author or the correct title. then as I finish the book I'll cross it off. if it's a buddy read for online, arc, etc too. also any Tobe read arcs or buddy reads I was listing. seemed to have gotten away from doing it. but need to start again. Now I put on the nook a shelf for short reads that are under 100 pages, up next which is books I want to get to sooner than later. I even now have a shelf for robbie's books which I put a few magic tree books on it we only started one so far and read one time can't seem to get him to do it again. I know those books might be alittle harder for him but we take turns reading out loud so it goes alittle faster. I think current I might have 7 books I can think of that are either currently reading or off to the side that I need to get back too. if I ever stay offline long enough today I want to finish 3 of them (1 arc and 2 on the nook) then I have to regroup and see what I have for the nook. I have palisade park by brennert which has been off to the side that I hope to get back to soon. but I still want to romance or something else. need to get those books finished for the book contest. 15 books so far for july, nothing so far for august. Need to top last years total.
