Denise (dulcinea3) | 400 comments The Pickwickians pass a pleasant day at Dingley Dell, meeting Mr. Wardle's elderly mother, playing cards and listening to a poem and a story from the clergyman. The next day, there is a shooting party, at which Mr. Winkle proves that he is not as good a shot as claimed, by shooting Mr. Tupman. Tupman's wound elicits the spinster's sympathy, and he remains behind, while the others go to a cricket match. There they discover their previous acquaintance, Mr. Jingle, whom Mr. Wardle invites to the house party. First, however, they all go out drinking and get home very late and drunk. In the meantime, Tupman and the spinster Rachael have been canoodling in the arbor, where they are observed by the servant boy Joe. The next day, Jingle overhears Joe telling Mrs. Wardle, and decides on a plan to cut out Tupman. He tells her of Joe's discovery, and that Tupman is only after her money, whereupon she transfers her affections to Jingle. In the meantime, Jingle tells Tupman that in order not to be discovered, he must pretend to ignore Rachael, to which Tupman agrees. Of course, this further convinces Rachael that Tupman does not really care for her!

Michaela Krijne I just finished chapter 8, now it is becoming exciting and I can't wait to find out how the story will evolve in the next chapter. I hope things will still work out for Mr. Tupman, but I fear it will be otherwise.

Denise (dulcinea3) | 400 comments I think we're seeing Jingle's true colors coming out. He makes a good first impression on people, but he is very sly.
