Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov of Russia, 1869. It's considered one of the more humorous of the old Russian classic novels.

The BBC movies of the Forsyte Saga are pretty good, made about 20 yrs ago with Damien Lewis as Soames Forsyte; other good actors also. Probably at your library.

I've seen it, and also the Masterpiece Theater series from 1969.
