Ended up abandoning A Tale of a Tub and I'm hoping to have better luck with The Fox. Starting it tonight!

(fyi: my old account had a glitch in it and it kept showing I had [-] books :p Had to reset my account)

Picking up my hold of The Club Dumas this afternoon, which is one that sounds really good!

Love that book! I've also read Arthur & George wish I also enjoyed but I'm hoping Julian Barnes has another book which competes with The Sense of an Ending

message 1211: by Laura (new)

Laura | 149 comments Just started (1 chapter in) The Catcher in the Rye. I have high expectations as it's one of those must read books- I'm expecting it to be something similar to Steinbeck but I have no idea. Also as it's one of Jilly Cooper's favourite books :) Glad it's a nice short read too.

I've only read a couple of Steinbecks works but they were nothing like CITR, thank goodness as far as I'm concerned as I detested that book.

I've only read his non-fiction, so can't comment on any of his novels, but highly recommend Levels of Life. Really looking forward to eventually reading his two list books.

Linda | 275 comments The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. It will be nice to get a short one checked off the list. This year has so far been the year of the BIG books!

message 1215: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Foord | 12 comments "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. After finally reading my first Dicken's novel in the Summer (Great Expectations) I figured it would be a good idea to try and get a second one under the belt :)

I didn't realize this author had another book on the list, let alone being a follow-up to Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. I read Perfume this year and loved it.

*edited to add* Oh, I was initially under the impression that "The Pigeon" was a sort of sequel to "Perfume", which is not the case. It's just the next book he wrote. Sorry to confuse anyone.

I didn't know there was another book by this author on the list! Thanks to you, I went and checked out Perfume, and it sounds really interesting! I'm going to add it to my soon to read tbr pile. :D

Well, it is an interesting read, to say the least! Actually, I'm not really sure saying that "I loved it" is correct, but it was a fascinating and unexpected reading journey. :)

I think I will reciprocate and check out "The Pigeon", so thanks!

Sandi | 227 comments Cristina wrote: "Where did you find it?! I was looking for it on the internet and couldn't find it. "

You can find it for free on goodreads. Go to the book's page, and under the Want to Read button you should find a green button that says read book.
It's the version I read last year.

message 1224: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 248 comments Tom Jones by Henry Fielding. I've loved Fielding's shorter works so I'm glad to finally get around to his doorstop. :)

Aleta I started Pamela. Or, Virtue Rewarded a few days ago and so far it's an engaging read.

I actually have both the Nancy Mitfords on loan from the library right now, but have not been able to pull myself together to start them for some reason.

Give it time. It took me awhile to get into "the Quiet American", but I ended up loving it!

message 1248: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments I have started The Brothers Karamazov (with another group) and Wise Blood. The second is very fast, quite short, and definitely weird. The first is neither of those things.
