Only Absalom, Absalom survived the great purge between the 2006 & 2008 editions.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Started Wharton's The House of Mirth, and am enjoying.

message 104: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I just started Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. So far, I am wondering where it is going as the first couple of chapters just kind of babble and meander on. But, I am looking forward to getting more into it.

I'm in the middle of The Club Dumas. Really enjoying it so far.

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Kindle: Iain Banks, The Player of Games (my last of his List titles). I was captured immediately, and am zipping through!
Audo: Crime and Punishment. That will probably take a while.

Ursula (saintursula) | 42 comments I just started The Passion of New Eve. It's ... interesting ... so far.

message 108: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I'm currently working on The Three Musketeers. It has been exceptionally engaging and full of scandal and intrigue.

I have read two of Gabriel García Márquez books so far "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Love in the Time of Cholera". Both are great books but between them "Love in the Time of Cholera", is the better of the two

I gritted my teeth throughout the whole thing. Good luck!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Under the Net - first for me by this author. Has me smiling in the first paragraph.

Luke (korrick) Amie wrote: "I started Memoirs of Hadrian. Has anyone else read this?"

Yep. A wonderful, magnificent book. The pinnacle of scholarly historical fiction, in my mind.

Lisa, I just read it. I liked it very much, it was very funny in spots and weirdly romantic. Let me know what you thought!

I've noticed that some readers have not enjoyed this novel, but I did. It's a little difficult, but remember it is meant to be a magical story. And there is a film version that I thought was excellent.

message 120: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I started "Simon's Family" aka "Simon and the Oaks" yesterday. I'm only a little way in, but I note that she writes this one more like a children's book than adult fiction....she over interprets and intervenes in the story too much for my liking. I'm sticking with it though because it is a good story and probably meant for a young adult audience.

Simon and the Oaks

So true, and so sad (in my opinion), Elizabeth.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I am choosing books from the combined list, so from my viewpoint, there are still 4 Faulkners on "the list."

message 123: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 90 comments I'm working on Kieron Smith, Boy by James Kelman. I've got 2 left of the 2010 books that were added. This one I think will be ok if it starts to pick up on some depth but my last one to read, The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt is going to be excruciating. I already quit it once. My goal is to finish it by the new year.

Sandi | 227 comments Andrea wrote: "My goal is to finish it by the new year."

This is how I feel about Gargantua and Pantagruel by Rabelais. I've read about 800 pages, yet there are 500 more to go...Seriously, who needs to read a whole chapter on how best to wipe their behind? And it goes on and on...

message 125: by Karina (new)

Karina | 401 comments Putting aside The Last of the Mohicans and starting Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier which I was suppose to finish by Labor Day!

Isn't it awful, Sandi? I had to start scanning after a few chapters to get through it, which I think is perfectly legitimate to get it off your list! There was no other way!

message 127: by Kerry (new)

Kerry Poznanski | 9 comments Just started Howards End by E.M. Forster. I really love the movie and enjoyed Where Angels Fear to Tread, so I have high hopes for this one. A couple of my 1001 list summer reads made me question why I am reading off the list, so hoping this will remind me.
