Kirsten (kmcripn) I just started Shame by Salman Rushdie.

message 1752: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've just started Snow by Orhan Pamuk. I really liked Pamuk's My Name is Red (which is not on the list), so let's see if this one is up to that novel.

Me too. The first two chapters have been extremely entertaining.

Nicola | 770 comments Oh, also Troubles which has an interesting start.

Quite a good range there I think! Something to suit whatever mood I'm in.

I first heard of this author today. I knew his books (well, two of them) but not his name.

I'm rather off put by the covers of so many his works having his name in huge type and the name of the novel being far less prominent. That to me is a good indication of a complete t****r! But maybe that's just his publishers and he's actually a humble, self effacing man.

Loved breakfast at tiffany's! Haven't read Disgrace, but it's certainly light and quick reading :)

Laura | 149 comments Amy wrote: "Started The 39 Steps this morning. Looks like a fairly short read."

Loved the 29 steps! I'm definitely tempted to read more books made into Hitchcock films

I wasn't a fan of this book either

The book and movie were so vastly different it was almost as if the movie wasn't really based on the book. About the only thing the stayed the same was the main character's name and he went to Scotland.

message 1774: by Laini (new)

Laini | 38 comments Just started Far from the Madding Crowd My edition only has 318 pages but teeny tiny writing so I'm a little intimidated! But we'll see how it goes. I remember Under the Greenwood Tree being quite a slow read.

message 1775: by Mia (new)

Mia | 1185 comments The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. I'm excited about this one!

message 1776: by Mia (new)

message 1777: by Nicola (last edited Oct 12, 2015 09:33AM) (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Devil And Miss Prym - this is a lot shorter and far more readable than I was expecting. A couple of hours and I've nearly finished it.

message 1778: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Military Philosophers - this should have been read last month but never mind. I found the opening rather difficult to follow as Nick (the protagonist) has shifted yet again and I was caught in a fair blizzard of new names.

It settled down a bit and I've just finished the first section.

message 1795: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 21 comments About to start The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle on a flight to Tokyo. I also thought about taking The Tale of Genji but I think it would be too ambitious, I can't spend my entire trip reading!

Linda | 275 comments Jamie wrote: "About to start The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle on a flight to Tokyo."

That's awesome! Enjoy the book (I loved this one) and your trip! :)

message 1797: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Art of Fielding and The Last of the Mohicans. I must be having an American kick or something.

At least they are very different books.

message 1798: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments Candide - This is both sickening and funny. I'm enjoying it but I know that the horrors of humanity that it parodies actually happened so the constant slaughter and rapes are stomach churning even if portrayed as extremely ott.

message 1799: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments Started Gone with the Wind yesterday. It is highly placed on the best of 1001-list, but I have been avoiding it, thinking that it was just a stupid love story. That is definitely not the case. Wonderful persons.

Oh my goodness, I read this book for the first time this year and it immediately went into my favorites pile. I absolutely loved it! I hope you enjoy it as well. :)
