I just joined this group and I also just saw The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Lord of the Rings are LIST books! So I "accidentally" started reading 2 LIST books.

Just starting The War of the Worlds, which as a SciFi addict, I cannot believe I have not read yet.

Ha ha! Yeah, this time last year my daughter was much easier to handle. But now she's 2 1/2 and needs much more attention, so my reading is taking a hit. I'm currently reading Eliot's Daniel Deronda, my second Eliot read. It's good, but so far not as great as Middlemarch.

is the luminaries on the newer lists?

No, it isn't. The last update to the list was in 2012 and The Luminaries hadn't been released then.
But so far they have updated the list every two years, so maybe there will be an update this year with The Luminaries on it.

Thank you very much Ell, my list has the childrens book by Byatt as the final selection, so is this 2010's list? And if so what was added in 2012?

I've just started reading Gargantua and Pantagruel by Fraçois Rabelais. Has anyone else read this yet? I've seem some mixed reviews so slightly apprehensive!

Yes, Byatt was added in 2010. In 2012 11 books were added, e.g. Freedom, The Sense of an Ending or 1Q84. You can find the complete additions on this group's bookshelf. The shelf is called "2012 Updates".

Started "Cats Eye" by Atwood - so far so good - felt a bit old when she is recounting school yard games. Do girls still play double ball anymore?

Shirley by Charlotte Brontë. I hope I love this one as much as I have her others.

Started The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Too early to say whether or not I'm enjoying it.

Started Heart of Darkness and the Congo Diary. Conrad seems to have created a perfect atmosphere for the telling of this story.

I just started The Count of Monte Cristo

My year started off with complications that seriously disrupted my reading life. But I finally started White Teeth. I can't wait to join the discussion, however, belatedly.

It seems like lots of folks had trouble with this one. I started it last year some time, and totally could NOT get into it, but this year when I finally started it, I was immediately captured by it.

I'm reading Primo Levi's 'The Drowned and the Saved' next... As short as it is I think it's going to be a tough one.

Hi! I am reading 1001 Nights and I must say, the stories are very amusing and some are sort of sexy! I was reading it on public transport on the way home last Friday and couldn't help but snort with laughter. :)

I'm starting White Teeth by Zadie Smith today. Finally picked it up from the library. Wish me luck, as I've read a lot of people didn't like it!

I liked it Lauren, its very funny in spots, and the angles on different races and ideas/beliefs/morals, was great, and I really remember the Grandma, but it has been a few years since I read it.

Just starting Decadence by Gorky, it's also known as The Artamonov Business. The copy I have was published in 1928 when fines were a penny a week at the library.
