Bill Paugh | 8 comments I was interested in who might have tried these variations on Kindle Reading. I recently reopened my Audible account after a couple of years. I thought I would try Whispersync with the new J.K. Rowling book and I enjoyed that. so, I got a new Fire HD yesterday and have tried Immersion Reading also. I am enjoying the experience and wondered what other are thinking.

When I first got my Fire HD, I tried immersion reading. I am a very visual person so it probably is just me, but I found it distracting listening and following in the book. I would rather just listen or just read but not the two together. I got a book with a special app on my iPhone which not only showed the words but added pictures you could explore. I'd listen to the book and stop to look at the pictures but not the two together.

Bill Paugh | 8 comments The only drawback I have seen is that you have to pause the narration to get the definition of an unfamiliar word. If it flashed pictures or something extraneous that would be distracting. I am a fairly slow reader and my mind can easily wander. What I have experienced so far is that running the narration at normal speed and following the highlighted words across the page help keep me focused and involved in the story. When I am out taking my walks, I just listen to the audio on my iPod. When I sit done to read, the book synchs and I am good to go. If one is a fast reader, then you can speed up the narration, and I can see where that might be problematic.

One thing I noticed in this particular book is that my audio still has some British terminology. For instance, candy floss instead of cotton candy. That has been all I have caught so far, though.

Overall, I still find it a pleasing experience.

I enjoy immersion reading when I am working out on the cross-trainer. The visual highlights keep me following the Audible narrator despite the distractions of the setting - a busy athletic club when I'm in Denver. I've been reading The Impact Equation by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith this way, and they narrate the Audible version themselves. I do feel more "immersed" in the content with the immersion reading tool.

David Sandoval | 2 comments I think it is fantastic that I can follow along while someone else is reading it to me. One thing I don't like about immersion reading is that it stops when the story is finish. As an AUDIBLE listener I like how they conclude every story instead of just cutting you off as soon as the story is over. Another thing about immersion reading I wish every story had it.

Ron Blake | 3 comments I am one who likes both, just not together. I love listening to the Audible books, and i love reading on my Kindle. For some reason I don't like doing both at the same time. I do think is great that it is possible to do both

Tom Semple (tom_semple) | 98 comments I don't have a 2gen fire so immersion reading is not available to me except by construction (e.g. listening to audiobook while following along in text). I don't think I'd use it very much, because read text faster than I can process audio/TTS (I can usually only handle about 1.5x normal playback speed). But I do switch between audio and text quite a lot (whispersync for voice) when I've got both available.

I have experimented a little with Google Play Books (for Android) which has a similar feature of highlighting text (entire sentences) when you turn on 'Read aloud'. I am not sure it really adds much, and the implementation is a little weak (it doesn't turn the page until it starts reading the next sentence on the next page).

Bill Paugh | 8 comments I am almost finished with my second book. using Whispersync and Immersion Reading. It is still going well. I have been rotating through 3 devices. On walks and when driving any distance I listen to my iPod. In the evenings I do the Immersion Reading with the Fire HD. When I head to bed I take the PaperWhite. They stay synched well. Now, the voice I hear in my head while reading is the narrator, though.

Kumi | 1 comments hi everyone hope you're enjoying your readings! I really want to get immersion reading so I am having to get a Kindle fire as apparently it doesn't work on Kindle white...Does anyone who already uses it know if you can get immersion reading with british english professional narration? or would it be mostly with American english professional narration?
thank you.

I imagine most of the narrators are from the U.S. but you can check an individual Audible title by playing the free sample to check out the accent of the narration.

Round Midnight | 1 comments The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism As a new Kindle Fire HDX user I have a question. I want to get Doris Kearns Goodwin's new book on Teddy Roosevelt/William Howard Taft on Audible, but I see that Amazon is not offering a Whispersync version. If I get the Audible version and the Kindle version (a great price today at $9.99), will the Kindle version know where I was when I stopped the Audible version? And vice versa?

Round, I don't believe the Audible and Kindle versions will sync up with each other if the book it's not designated with Whispersync for voice.
