Alan Dean (raincoastfiction) | 29 comments No politics, simply an engaging account of living alone for five years in a remote hillside cottage in the Welsh hills. A time spent with with no modern distractions, not even running water or electricity. I suspect many of us have pondered this possibility, and if you have, this book might persuade you to take the next step.

I would love to live in the country, very simply. No digital tech.

But I would have to have the modern plumbing and electricity.

And have some company as well.

Even Thoreau, when he went to Walden's Pond, would walk into town on a regular basis.

Alan Dean (raincoastfiction) | 29 comments Lynnm, well worth putting on your "To Read" list.

The best description is that it's a bit like going for a long walk, or series of walks, with an easy going expert with the ability to pull you gently into a world that might otherwise have passed by with only a brief glance. The author lived alone, with the exception of occasional visitors, for five years without electricity or running water in a semi-derelict house in the Welsh hills. Many might do this to "find themselves", but what he found was that instead of turning inwards on a journey of discovery, instead the wild world around him pulled him away until he felt that rather than finding himself he had left himself behind. Basically, he lived unselfconsciously in tune with the rhythms of the seasons and the wildlife surrounding him. This is what happens when to spend time in wild places; the self-discovery is not in finding something out, but in leaving things behind. I could say much more, but while spoil the pleasant surprise awaiting you.
