Ashley (ashinscribbleland) | 62 comments The book one an award (nothing well know that I can remember). The author was possibly danish or slavic? I'm not a hundred percent sure.

Basically it was a small town and one boy in school decides that life has no meaning. He climbs a tree and won't come down.

His class is completely in shock over this and decide that it has changed their entire world and the only way to fight that is to show him there is meaning to life.

They begin to try and find ways to prove there is meaning. It ends up that someone suggests a person sacrifice what means the most to them. This involves giving up that item to the pile they begin to establish. That person gets to pick the next person and what they give up.

Some of the items are comics, a dog, a dug up corpse of a younger sibling, a girl's virginity, someone's finger. The items become more and more crazy and important as they go along.

Near the end of the book their pile is found and a museum wants to buy it. The kids agree thinking this is a great way to show the world their meaning.

Then the boy who has been in the tree tells them they're all idiots and they sold their meaning for a price. Really struck by his analysis someone burns the pile down.
