Denise Stephenson (denisestephenson) | 21 comments Hi Dystopia Fans,

I'm wondering who else writes dystopias in the group. I'd like to connect with other writers. I just created a Facebook page for my forthcoming novel, Isolation, in which bacteria run amok, thanks to Agri-Biz and the government bans face touching. www.facebook.com/DeniseStephensonIsol...

Let me know if you Like the page, are interested in the book. When I get closer to publishing, I'm hoping this group will also be interested in R&R.

Clare O'Beara | 28 comments Hi Denise,
I hope your book is coming on fine.

I live in Dublin and I have published what people are calling a dystopian near future SF book.
Dining Out Around The Solar System.
This is set in London and partly in Dublin.
Actually I'd call it alternate world SF, but sure enough all is not going well. That's what makes a story interesting!

Denise Stephenson (denisestephenson) | 21 comments Nice to meet you Clare! I'll check out your book. Right now I just ordered my first copies of Isolation, so I'm pretty excited. It's time to create my GoodReads book page and so much more.

Are you interested in the possibility of exchanging read and review with each other? https://www.facebook.com/DeniseStephe...

Clare O'Beara | 28 comments I'm going to ask if Isolation is anything to do with a zombie apocalypse or flesh eating bugs... if so I'm sorry but I'd rather not read it!
On the other hand if it's not about zombies I could well be interested.
I review a lot, but you would need to accept an unbiased review.
Get cracking on that author page, it is good fun!

No Claire, no zombies, no flesh eating bugs, though bacteria is central, but it's regular bacteria. Isolation is a character-driven novel. It's also more post-modern than genre fiction tends to be. The opening sections are intercut stories from across the U.S. interspersed in the second section with news articles. It's epic in scope, beginning where we are today where unseen deadly bacteria might attack you from a food source and becomes dystopic as bacterial outbreaks grow and the government starts banning varied kinds of touch, such as touching our own faces. Eventually quarantine is the only possibility.

As to unbiased reviews, I am a writing center director, so I believe in them. Though as a writer, I seek a respectful response to the work.

I write dystopias and have works set before, during and after apocalyptic events...check them out when you have time :)

Aaron W. Miller (amill016) | 4 comments Hello All,
I am a writer of dystopian fiction as well. My first novel comes out on August 16th of this year. It would be great to connect with other dystopian authors. And I'd love to do a book swap. I am in the review stage as well. The book is called "The Gift of The Grackle". A one sentence summary:

It's difficult trying to obtain absolute knowledge when a 100 foot Grackle is threatening to vaporize you.

Let me know if you would like to do a book swap.

Hi Vardan,

The After Life sounds like a character-driven novel exploring our world through a dark future lens--that's what I call a dystopia. It looks like several of your pieces are rather short for novels, though you are prolific! Are any of them longer? When I get into characters, I really love for them to go on for awhile.

I'm in the midst of two R&Rs (both rather long), but when I'm done, I may pick up one of yours.

Any interest in a character-driven story in which bacteria become more and more virulent until the government bans them from touching their own faces and eventually quarantines what's left of the US population? If so, check out Isolation. Amazon hasn't fully loaded my page yet, and the electronic book isn't yet out, but here's the link to the soft cover version. http://www.amazon.com/Isolation-Denis...

Hi Denise,

All my stories are character driven as I am always interested and intrigued by seeing the tales I tell through the eyes of an often conflicted protagonist. Concerning the length of my works, some of them are short stories and some are novels. In this sense, I never stick to the standard word count limitations...my stories are as long as the tale I am telling.

I will be interested in reading your work and thank you for your interest in mine. I will be happy to provide you a free copy of any work you would like to read.

Hi Vardan,

Of course your writings are varied in length as appropriate to each. I was just surprised. Most authors I've run into in social media are indie publishing novels, but I can see the reason to go your route.

Let's keep in touch. When my electronic version is ready, we can do an exchange.

Best,
Denise

Imogene Ashton | 1 comments Hi Denise,
I write dystopian and fantasy fiction. I've actually just sent my dystopian novel off to my literary agent, so it should be published in the near future. My website has the first few chapters of the book, in case anyone wants to check it out. When I'm published, I'd love to do a review swap :)

James Parsons | 10 comments Hello, my book Orbital Kin published last year, is in three parts, and the final part is some sort of dystopian UK Britain set around 25 years from now possibly. It looks at a few aspects of culture and social breakdown, tribes and groups that could grow and fight for control while the main narrative plot moves along.

message 16: by James (new)

James Parsons | 10 comments I did not specifically set out to write dystopian SF with Orbital Kin, but I did want to have three subgenres of SF put together with the main plot and characters moving through each part to the end. I do have an honest interest and love of dystopian books, tales and movies, and with the increase in these over the last decade or so, this part of Orbital Kin is partly a reaction or response to these with this particular tale at least and these characters.

message 17: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara | 28 comments 25 years does not give much time for everything to happen! Is Britain still in the EU?

message 18: by Denise (new)

Denise Stephenson (denisestephenson) | 21 comments Hi James,

I'm curious how part three would be dystopic and not the earlier parts. They must be leading there, yes?

And Clare, good question. 25 years isn't very long. And yet, dystopias, save 1984, are rarely set at a particular time because entropy happens in an unpredictable timeline. For those reasons, I tried to make Isolation epic in scope, covering three generations. Rarely do we get to see the entropy in action. Which brings me back to my question, James, about whether the first two sections of Orbital Kin lead to the dystopia of your third section.
