grapeseeds A little controversial, but what is the worst YA fiction you've ever read? It can be recently published or a lot older, and say why.

kirstin ✿ Marked, The Boy Who Sneaks in My Bedroom Window.
I haven't read a lot of books, so... so far those two.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Rose Hush, Hush and also Fallen

To be fair, I have concluded that the fallen angel sub-genre is not for me after hating both of those books. The reason I didn't like them is because I didn't like any of the characters, I couldn't get behind the romances and they seemed more like teen emo ID fantasy rather than a love story.

This opinion might not be popular but I also really didn't care for Divergent I found it a little thin. I do actually like Hunger Games and read this after it, I found that Divergent just doesn't have depth. The world lacks motivation. I'm sure that later on the author remedies my criticism but I didn't care enough for the first one to continue on in the series.

A I didn't like
City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

Samantha I have concluded that the fallen angel sub-genre is not for me..."

You might try Daughter of Smoke & Bones by Laini Taylor or the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand. Both have fallen angels (sort of) but are significantly better than the two you mentioned. I highly recommend Daughter of Smoke & Bones as it is one of the most unique stories I've read in the past 2 years.

You've got to try Angelfall. It's amazing and nothing like Fallen and Hush-Hush.

I gotta recommend Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Angelfall as well! Those two has redeemed the fantasy/paranormal genre. The first is written beautifully it feels magical. The latter is set in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by angels.

I don't care about Unearthly at all. It's full of stereotypes and cliches. I hated that book and Clara.

And what you said about Divergent, couldn't agree more. Not a fan of the series but not a hater either. I just can't connect with Tris and everyone else really. Her voice is so bland and she lacks of human emotions. The writing is okay... but pretty average and, as you said, no depth.

message 11: by Izzy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Izzy Keep in mind, I really dislike Young Adult novels. Some epic fantasy YA are quite good but most of the YA novels talk down to the readers or make it so the readers/self-insert characters are special little snowflakes.

I wasn't impressed with 'Fault in our stars', either.
The characters tried to make a show about how intelligent they were and that they were individuals but they were spouting pretentious bullshit.
I didn't think it was well written, either. :/

message 12: by A (last edited Jul 31, 2013 09:27AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

A ^^^ I couldn't agree more with you on The fault in our stars. It's over-hyped, the book was boring.

Natalie -The Evermore series (I actually though the first book was alright but it just got worse and dragged on and on so I gave up on it and I never give up on books because I'm too curious for my own good).

-The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter: just NO! Such a good premise yet so frustrating because those "tests", which a lot of girls didn't pass and died because of it, are not the butt kicking action-filled tests you'd think they are they're just pure failure.

-Lucian by Isabel Abedi it's just ridiculous and horrible and I still want to punch the Main character for being so f'ing dumb at the end (and I'm not an aggressive person so yeah this IS the worst YA book I've read ever).

P.S: phew, now I feel better, these things just needed to be said xD
P.P.S:if you think that ranting post was bad don't even get me started on authors attacking reviewers for bad reviews or being online bullies in general xD

Izzy Ayesha wrote: "^^^ I couldn't agree more with you on The fault in our stars. It's over-hyped, the book was boring."

I didn't know much about the book when I picked it up. I saw it in a lot of charity shops and thought that since it was cheap, I should give it a go. It wasn't until I finished it and saw on Goodreads just how many positive reviews it got.

I find it surprising just how many people have said that this book was "deep and thought provoking" and yet they have no real understanding of the use of foreshadowing in the book. Some of the people who gave it 5 stars have basically admitted that they didn't really understand what the characters were talking about. :/

I live in Asia and books here cost three times more than the original price in the US. I picked TFios after reading many popular reviews and most of them were positive. After reading this book I realised that I didn't only waste my money but also ended up wasting my time.

I didn't find anything special in the story in fact I found the characters to be annoying, boring and unrealistic making it very for me hard to connect with them. Both Hazel and Gus were like some 60-years-old stuck in some teeny bodies. The only thing I liked about this book was the ending.

All the quotes in the book were absolute nonsense to me
"some infinities are larger than the others" :p

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a must-read! I also recommend Angel Burn which is also a new tale about angels and a girl with a mysterious power.

I didn't like City of Bones because I felt like I didn't know the main character by the end of it. Plus the character of Jace rubbed me the wrong way. :p

message 22: by Kyren (last edited Jul 31, 2013 02:28PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyren -Before I Fall- by Lauren Oliver.
It is just so messed up and disturbing.

kirstin ✿ I'm really glad to know that I'm not alone with Divergent and City of Bones and The Fault in Our Stars. Though I didn't like those book in the slightest, I wouldn't list it in here because they're not the worst; they could have been better.

So after finishing a new book here's mine:
Marked by the Casts
~ This book is horrible! Poorly written, grammar and sentence construction. Poor character development. Boring as hell. Ridiculous plot. I can't believe I bought this.
The Boy Who Sneaks in My Bedroom Window by Kirsty Moseley
~ Same with the above.
Hollowland by Amanda Hocking
~ Same with the above.

Alice Bzrk by Michael Grant - I gave up about 40 pages in, it was just awful.

Therealbadkitty The following
Prince of Wolves (The Grey Wolves, #1) by Quinn Loftis Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1) by Lili St. Crow Secrets of My Hollywood Life (Secrets of My Hollywood Life, #1) by Jen Calonita Gossip Girl (Gossip Girl, #1) by Cecily von Ziegesar Gucci Girls (Project Fashion) by Jasmine Oliver Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant Ruby Red (Ruby Red Trilogy, #1) by Kerstin Gier Heist Society (Heist Society, #1) by Ally Carter My Love Lies Bleeding (Drake Chronicles, #1) by Alyxandra Harvey The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner Immortal City (Immortal City, #1) by Scott Speer Crewel (Crewel World, #1) by Gennifer Albin Velveteen by Daniel Marks Lost Voices (Lost Voices, #1) by Sarah Porter Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black Bumped (Bumped, #1) by Megan McCafferty
Yeah I know that's quite a lot and I love YA, I love tons of books I know aren't particularly good, these are the only books I've either found boring or jaw droppingly awful.

message 26: by Therealbadkitty (last edited Jul 31, 2013 04:27PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Therealbadkitty Dystopian and Angel books seem to be the biggest failures in terms of execution in YA from what people are saying.

These books are about angels and I thought were excellent. Give them a try :) They aren't anything like Fallen or Hush Hush.
Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #1) by Laini Taylor Unearthly (Unearthly, #1) by Cynthia Hand The Collector (Dante Walker, #1) by Victoria Scott Angel Burn (Angel, #1) by L.A. Weatherly The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff Mercy (Mercy, #1) by Rebecca Lim

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Origin by Jessica Khoury The writing is plain bad and plot development a bit sloppy. I also don't think some of the characters were realistic at all.

Gabby Mockingjay. Hands down.

message 32: by B.T. (last edited Aug 01, 2013 04:51PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

B.T. Clifford I haven't been able to get through a contemporary YA novel yet. And I've tried several. Perhaps I shouldn't have started with Twilight. I still have scars from the few pages I got through. Tried the Hunger Games too, but couldn't get past the 1st person present voice. The whole paranormal angel, vampire romance thing looked too lame to try. Suggestions for success would be welcome.

Keily Olivia wrote: "Gabby wrote: "Mockingjay. Hands down."

I did

message 34: by Janet (last edited Aug 01, 2013 12:46AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Janet Burned (House of Night #7). The first book I liked, the next couple were worth continuing just because I wanted to find out how the series would finish, the fifth redeemed the series slightly. Then Burned came out. It was the worst book I have ever read. Stopped reading the series after that. It's dragged on too long and it's obvious that the authors are having trouble coming up with plots if they think Burned could be called a book.

message 35: by Raevyn (new)

Raevyn "Lucia" [I'm in it for the books] I HATED Chasing Vermeer (Chasing Vermeer, #1) by Blue Balliett !! The only good thing about it that I can remember is the name Calder, but that doesn't change the awfulness of the book!

grapeseeds Natalie wrote: "-The Evermore series (I actually though the first book was alright but it just got worse and dragged on and on so I gave up on it and I never give up on books because I'm too curious for my own goo..."

As a person who loves her rants, I also get pretty mad if authors can't accept criticism or simply attack people who don't agree with them. The whole idea of publishing your book is that it's now in the public domain and open to public scrutiny; readers are not a tool for polishing self important authors' already inflated egos!
PhewXD

amanda i really hated switched by amanda hocking

Addee The Giver

Ender's Game

Something really off about both of them. Made my skin crawl.

Scarlett TWILIGHT, HOST, NEW MOON, BREADING DAWN, and WHATEVER THAT THIRD TWILIGHT BOOK IS. Horrible writer!!!

I think all of James Patterson's YA books are just absolute crap.

Kristina Hands down, House of Night series, closely followed by Fallen series. They are just brain cells burners.

Mockingjay was pretty awful, too.

Julien THE FAULT IN OUR STARSSSSSS :D

amber definitely the Matched series, I don't usually fully give up on books but they were unbelievably boring and predictable...
