Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) Amelia,
You should post some of the posters and trailers you've posted on the Percy Jackson group.

message 157: by Emily (new)

Emily (teacups_and_rainydays) | 38 comments eh. the pics are okay.
PERCY JACKSON: loved it! it's not like harry potter at all! im not sure if im going to like the movie though. the movies, even if they're good, never are quite as good as the books.my favorite characters were thalia and rachel and maybe annabeth. they were pretty awesome!
the Hunger Games: haven't gotten to read it yet. can't wait though!
the mortal instruments: i liked it a lot, not as much as hp or pj though.

message 158: by Miss Ryoko (last edited Dec 14, 2009 07:17AM) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Okay! I saw the pictures in the discussion email and HAD to come comment! I LOVE the first one! And I think Logan likes a wee bit like Zac Effron (poor Logan!) in the second photo.

But I agree with Emily. And I know, Amelia, you and I have talked about this but I'm going to express it here too, everyone is wrong in the movie. The casting is all wrong! And its really, really bothering me. I'll probably eventually see it, but its not a movie I'm going to be excited to see.

Oh, and to answer the topic of this post, I'm reading The Land of Elyon series (I'm on the 4th book) right now, which is beautifully written! It is nice to read children's literature that is written well. None of it is dumbed down and the detail and description is great. I think kids these days can use some rich vocabulary!

message 159: by Annalisa (last edited Dec 14, 2009 08:10AM) (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) Teresa,
What age group would you say The Land of Elyon is for? I keep seeing later books, but never the first book. My daughter is eight (she's read HP & PJ and is currently reading Fablehaven).

message 160: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) I definitely think your 8 year old daughter would enjoy it! I think the books are appropriate for kids of all ages (they're in the children's section at the libraries in my area). And as I mentioned, the writing is beautiful! The vocabulary is rich. Sometimes I feel like books that are written for young kids are written very simplistically, which I understand why, but I really enjoy these books for the great quality of writing. And she'll especially like them if she's into fantasy!

And apparently (of course, I'm not surprised) they're making a movie out of the first book (oy!)

Hopefully you can find the first one somewhere! I bet she would really enjoy the series! The first one is called The Dark Hills Divide. You would probably enjoy the series too~ ^_^

message 161: by Annalisa (last edited Dec 14, 2009 08:44AM) (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) Teresa,
Thanks for the recommend. I'll put it on hold at my library, which surprisingly enough doesn't have any holds in it.

message 162: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Anytime! Let me know what you think (and/or what your daughter thinks!)

message 163: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) She's reading The Cabinet of Wonders right now too and loving it. Have you heard of it? It was on a display shelf at the library and I've read good reviews for it.

message 164: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) I'm not crazy about the casting for Percy Jackson either, although I do like Pierce Brosnan for Chrion. Percy and Annabeth are way too old (and he does look like Zac in that last poster!). We'll see. You never really know how good or bad it's going to be until you watch the movie.

message 165: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) That's true (about the movie) Yeah the adults are cast pretty well, its the three main characters I have a problem with (and you're right, all of them are too old). And I thought Grover was supposed to be this nerdy looking kid with curly hair.... not a smooth lookin' cool kid.

No, I haven't heard of that book but I take a look at it at the library!

oh my gosh ive been looking at that series and wondering if it was good! thanks for the recommendation!

message 167: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) No problem!!!

message 168: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) so in the last book, is the character still 12? or does she age at all?

message 169: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) HAHA! Yes, she's like Percy and Harry, she's a year older in each book. The 4th book in the series, the one I'm actually on, is more like a prequel (but not really). Alexa is on a journey with another character and he's telling her about his childhood. And then the last one picks up right after her companion tells her his tales. So she is probably the same age in the last two would be my guess.

Lol...Naruto Rocks! (Katelyn, Haku.) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

message 171: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 14, 2009 02:37PM) (new)

Percy Jackson rocks! I think that Shae should read it. All in agreement say "I"!

I !

message 172: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) aye

message 173: by [deleted user] (new)

No no no no no. YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN BOLD!!!!

message 174: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) aye. But at least I spelled it correctly :).

message 175: by [deleted user] (new)

Whatever. You have to get me the book. Our school doesn't have it.

message 176: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) That's what public libraries are for (and parents to drive you there).

message 177: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the public library! Seriously, saves me so much money!

message 178: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) lol. im currently addicted to barnes&noble. borders is stinky cheese.

message 179: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Haha and I feel the opposite. I love Borders and hate B&N. Though I have shopped there but I prefer Borders. But now that I'm a broke post college grad, I prefer the library :-)

message 180: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) lol yeah i understand the borke, college part.
the only stores i really REALLY go crazy over are barnes&noble, virgin and the discovery channel store :)

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments There are some great Borders and some great Barnes & Nobles. There is one Borders in Providence that I'm absolutely in love with. I found Harry Potter book in Spanish, a CD of choral Christmas music for $4, and got in a conversation with the cashier about reading Harry Potter in Spanish (she had done the same thing). It was the best book store trip ever. :)

message 182: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) That's awesome! I have three Harry Potter books in Spanish!! Though I got them from a bookstore that is no longer around :-(

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments Which three? I have the first one.

That stinks that the store isn't around anymore. :(

message 184: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) I have the 2nd, 4th, and 5th! When I studied abroad, I should have bought more of them from the countries I went to...but didn't even think of it. Grr

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments I have a list of things that I want to buy when I go abroad in a few years. XD

message 186: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) You should get some Harry Potter books so I can live vicariously through you! Haha! Actually, that's what my friends do. They're a couple, so when one of them went abroad on the trip I went on, he bought three Harry Potter books (we went to Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic), one book for each country, then his fiance went to Japan and she got one. So they'll have books 1-7 from different countries they visited. I should have thought of that!

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments My library has all of the books in Polish! (not that that does me any good, since I can't speak Polish XD).

I would love to get the Harry Potter books in German. Hungarian too (I'm quickly falling in love with the language).

message 188: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) hungarian sounds really pretty :)
i'd like to learn how to speak russian.

message 189: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Me too!! But I want to learn all the languages (well, except maybe French. haha)! I want to go to grad school for linguistics. Learning languages is my favorite thing to do. Languages rule!

message 190: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) at my school, kids take latin & hebrew for their FL. and i took hebrew and greek in college (well, ive only had 1 greek class, and i wont be taking any more! ancient greek is HARD! plus, i didnt have annabeth to tutor me :P)

message 191: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Hebrew!! That's so cool! I would love to learn Hebrew! I took Spanish, German, Ojibwe, and ASL in college! And I was so mad because the year after I was finished they started offering Farsi too! I would have LOVED to have taken that class!

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments Ojibwe?! WHERE DID YOU GO FOR COLLEGE????!!!

Languages rock so much. ;D

message 193: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) I know Rachel!! I was really surprised and knew I HAD to take it. One of my great great grandmas only spoke Ojibwe so my grandpa still knows some of it. It was really great to learn that part of my heritage since its quickly becoming a forgotten language.

But to answer your question, I live and went to college in Minnesota! So that probably makes it less surprising. :-p

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments Where is the language Ojibwe spoken, anyways? How does being in Minnesota make it less surprising?

I would love to learn Polish for heritage reasons. Also, because it is such a pretty language. :D

message 195: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Oh, haha because the Ojibwe indians live mostly in the north part of the country, stretching across a few of the northern states, like Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota (and Canada too!)

When I visited Poland on my study abroad trip, I really wish I had known a few phrases in Polish! It seems crazy with all the consonants in the words, but looks pretty awesome! Have you ever visited Poland? I really loved it there!

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments Ok, Minnesota does make sense now. XD

I've never left the US. *grumbles*

I love things with crazy consonants. (Even if you only understand the pronunciation of an odd language, not any of the words themselves, you still sound smart to people who don't know it...mwaha ha ha). The sound reminds me a little bit of Hungarian, but seems a bit softer.

message 197: by Miss Ryoko (last edited Dec 17, 2009 07:09PM) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) Haha, that's okay. I had never been out of the US until my trip... and I was 23 years old then. I was also 23 the first time I had left Minnesota (to go to another state)!

But you're studying abroad soon or planning on it? Where do you want to go?

message 198: by Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (last edited Dec 17, 2009 07:18PM) (new)

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 246 comments I've been to other states, but my state is tiny. :D

When I'm in college, a year and a half from now.
-Austria*
-Spain*
-France
-Germany*
-Hungary*
-Italy
-Poland*

The starred ones are the ones I really want to go to.

message 199: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been to Canada, Astralia, and Hawii. They were all when I was little and I can't really remember it but oh well. :)I really really really want to go to Paris someday.

message 200: by Miss Ryoko (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) That's awesome! Maybe you can go on two trips! One of my friends studied abroad 3 times! (Spain, Ecuador, and then on the trip with me) I absolutely LOVED Germany! Berlin, Germany is really great! I would love to live there.

I would love to go to Japan and India...but loads of other places. But those are two countries I'd really love to visit.

I hope you'll be able to study abroad! It's a great experience. And I almost didn't do it because I hate flying! I'm so glad I got over it and went!
