Isn't it funny about part of David Jason's biography finding it's way into the latest Bridget Jones - that must have been so confusing for the first people who came across it.

message 202: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments I don't know anything about this - was it a mistake at the publishers or the printers?

message 203: by [deleted user] (new)

The printers apparently. I guess that someone is going to get in a bit of hot water!

Awesome, I'd much prefer David Jason to Bridget Jones anyday!

message 205: by [deleted user] (new)

Has anybody heard the new 1471 lady?- she's rather posh - I think my husband is smitten :0)

message 206: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) And the award for Most Groan-Inducing Book Title of the Year goes to:

*drum-roll*

Tequila Mockingbird: A literary guide to cocktails

message 207: by [deleted user] (new)

Snort! I love that.

message 208: by [deleted user] (new)

Ellie - are these things you're finding at the literature festival? I love cocktails so I'm going to HAVE to find a copy of this!!!

Lee wrote: "I love Dave Hairy Biker!!!!!!!!"

Is he still in Strictly Lee? - I have a really low tolerance for the tv so haven't been watching it but I do love the Hairy Bikers!

message 211: by [deleted user] (new)

@ Laurel- yes he's still in and so popular with the audience that I think (& hope) he'll be in for a while.
What's your favourite cocktail - mine's a mojito (or anything with rum really)

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

I love this idea - otters who look like Benedict Cumberbatch

Ok well it was worth a try but they don't do it :(

message 216: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh what shame :0( - I did read that it only started April this year so fingers crossed they'll introduce it soon.

message 217: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
To be honest, I'm not surprised - we will probably be the last one's to get it. Also, the publishers don't make it easy either - too afraid of losing money to worry about library users!

Just a quick question - has anyone else been following all the stuff about Goodreads deleting people's reviews and bookshelves?

message 219: by [deleted user] (new)

I have - I haven't read much about it but from what I gathered it was to do with people making offensive and personal remarks about authors.

message 220: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
It's a bit crazy! To be honest, I don't agree with any form of censorship but when you think of how it's used in terms of human right abuses in some places, it makes the whole GR thing look a bit petty.

message 221: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely - I don't know what the offending posts were about - but I've seen quite a few reviews on GR in which people have got incredibly worked up and rude about both the book and author - just because they didn't like the style of writing or how the story ended etc - I just don't understand it.

message 222: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Yeah it can get a bit mean, and also I've seen where the author has got involved in a slagging match cos their book has been given a bad review which they shouldn't be doing either - think it all kind of boils down to people need to play nicely!

message 223: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly - I guess some people are just looking for an argument - perhaps it's an attention seeking thing too.

message 224: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
More than likely - which was what was making me think about censorship issues in other places and how easy we have it that we absolutely take our freedom of speech for granted and abuse it by being horrible to people!

message 225: by [deleted user] (new)

It's like when tabloid journalists bang on about freedom of the press

message 226: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) Where does "freedom of expression" end and "bullying" start?

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes it's such a difficult issue - a good idea for a Cheltenham Literature Festival debate.

message 228: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) It would be, maybe we can e-mail someone and suggest it!?

OK so I found the website for the ebook sharing I was talking about - it's called Boosh (as in BOOk SHare), am not very clear on how it works but you will have to buy the app I think. Here it is anyway and hopefully someone more technologically savvy than me can figure it out...

Hilary | 2082 comments And the amount you sleep, I suspect! My little dog is 8months old now but I remember very clearly taking her outside at midnight, four in the morning and again at about 6.30. You forget just how much hard work puppies are. What breed is she?

message 232: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahhhhhhh! What's her name?

message 233: by [deleted user] (new)

Was deeply involved in Effi Briest and King John this morning when I suddenly remembered that my mother-in-law was coming round and we were taking her out to dinner. I rushed around frantically tidying up and had just finished when my cat was extensively sick, all over the living room carpet!
Fortunately the rest of the day went much better.
What's everyone else been up to?

Yes you're right! It's been over 15 years since I last had a puppy. Still it doesn't't last long. She's a lab X called Molly.

Hilary | 2082 comments I've been baking with my granddaughters all afternoon. We ended up with a dozen fairy cakes decorated with glacé icing and a variety of sprinkles and a sandwich cake covered in coffee buttercream and yet more sprinkles. Lots of tasting and finishing off things along the way of course.

Finally as I was putting everything in the sink the seven year old turned and very seriously to me. " Gran, is there any thing else you'd like licking?" At which the three year old piped up "I'll help with licking!" I was helpless sigh laughter!

A great day

message 236: by [deleted user] (new)

Bless them!
The cakes sound yummy

message 237: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) You've reminded me that I bought a coffee cake the other day. So lazy of me. I should bake more

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm more of an eater than a baker.

message 239: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (theelliemo) I love baking, just never seem to have enough time these days. I used to love baking with my mum when I was younger

message 240: by Laurel (new)

Aww Hilary that sounds awesome! Bless your granddaughters - they sound so sweet!

I love baking too - and all my friends and family are more the eating types which works out just fine cos I love feeding folks!

message 241: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds like we have the materials for The Great I Read Therefore I Am Bake Off. I will be available for judging duties :0)

message 242: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments Unfortunately I'm both a baker and an eater which also means I'm a constant dieter!

message 243: by MaureenAnn (new)

MaureenAnn I can't remember when I last made a cake, so I'll volunteer as deputy judge to assist Lee :0)

Made some Apple and Walnut chutney today - I was given a bag of windfall apples so have been trying to come with as many things I can make with apples as I can - that's the last of them gone now thank goodness.

message 246: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2082 comments That sounds lovely, I've never made any preserves but some years I do have lots of apples and plums. The most I've done is stew them and freeze them!

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

May I suggest plum wine and cider?

message 248: by Laurel (new)

Laurel | 1486 comments Mod
Or plum jam? (yummy on toast or crumpets)

Mmmmmm

Ellie (theelliemo) Colleagues from our Kent office visited today, so I have been occupied all day, not long home. Have I missed much?
