I sat through the movie (and definitely won't read the book), but I'd have kicked his nuts if Rhett Butler had tried to get close to me, and had he behaved towards me the way he did to Scarlett I'd have strung him up by his very testicles and left him hanging.
ETA: heh, and "sexist" that is definitely correct. A misogynic sexist is what he is.

LOL, no problem about the typing, I guessed as much :D
Who says such men settle? They may marry, occasionally, but I haven't one of those men ever seen "settle". They all keep fucking around. They stay players. Usually already by the time the first bun is in the oven. I've had men come on to me *while* their wives were at home gestating! And it's not just my personal experience, that much is also sure.
I'm always astonished when a married man doesn't try to get some on the side, and I take note of what kind don't. They absolutely are not those who fuck around or had "lots of pussy".
Arabella wrote: "A rake has all the sexual expertise and yet when he finds the right woman (you) he turns into the most considerate alpha male on the planet..."
You seriously believe that? That's not my life experience so far. Every womanizer and mean-minded cheater I had the misfortune to observe would stay exactly what he is. Someone who disrespects women, considers them meat to use for his gratification, and to discard when another comes along.
And in the case of Rhett Butler, already going by what was in the movie, he would be slapping her around on top of having as many prostitutes, lovers and affairs on the side as he can manage to hide from her (or not even hide).
I also have trouble with that "alpha-male" and "considerate" assumption. An alpha-male is commonly a man suffering from one of 4 or rather 5 personality disorders, all of which except one are harmful to those around him, the last is harmful to himself.
They tend to end up in leader-position not because they are the most apt leader. They do so, because their anti-social pathology leads to such aggression that they bully, cheat or trick their way into that position. The most common descriptive for any of these subtypes is "not nice". Now take a guess how nice they are to their women or why most of these men have divorces and problems with their family galore...
Sooooooooo...
I really don't understand this blue-eyed idea that a man would ever change, who per definition is a womanizer without a fragment of respect for the other gender. I mean you just have to open your eyes wide and take in what you see?
It still baffles me. :)

But we or at least I am talking about the fantasy world of fiction! Since none of us can actually run off with Mr Darcy or Rhett...we are just playing a little what if!
Sigh. in real life...no none of the above would happen I'm afraid....

As an alpha male myself, I should object to your defamatory characterization. On the other hand, as an alpha male, I don't really care ;)
No bullying or cheating here, honest.
A combination of looks, charm and talent was entirely sufficient.
