Thunder Below! is a riveting account of the exploits of the US submarine USS Barb in World War II. The Barb was responsible for the sinking of the most tonnage of any sub in WWII, was the first submarine to use rockets in combat, and conducted the only land operation on the Japanese home islands during WWII. The commander of the Barb received the Medal of Honor for one of the sub's combat patrols, and went on to be awarded the Navy Cross four times.

The story is told in a "you-are-there" style, fast paced with a lot of action, dialogue (I get to shout "DIVE!" and "CLEAR THE BRIDGE! BATTLE STATIONS TORPEDOES!" a lot), plus notes from journals, an "illegal" diary, and cross-referenced with Japanese records of the time.
