I have asked about that too, it's just unlucky that members had signed when the group started out and been inactive since then. Shirley told me that she does send the emails out to remind them but I'm sure if you do yours again, it would bring it back to life.

We had noticed that Jey, Chimney and Diana S didn't write it, but we didn't want to push people. Is there someone who wants to write it? Or those who listed themselves and are now not ready? We can rearrange the list!
I'll write a post in the folder ...

Julia (juliastrimer) Hello, brand new here. I'm a moderator for our library group, and I made sure to check the circle that only shows the Group Rules to new members one time. Right now I'm getting your "Group Rules" popping up with every post, so you must have checked "Always show rules when members post new comments."

Jean just told me you had reset it to this because of some members doing self-promotion, but I hope you reconsider. In my other groups, either self-promoting folks are deleted or they are given an "Authors" thread where they CAN post.

message 57: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments I agree with Julia. In addition to be disturbing, it messes up the page if you are with the cursor incidentally over the comment box when the page is loading. So I must always refresh the page (taking care that the cursor isn't on the comment box) in order to see the last comment because it overwrites the second last.

message 58: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments It is true, is can be quite disturbing. I've changed it so that it only show's for new members, the only trouble we've had so far were people joining in order to spam, and let's face it, a lot of them won't be stopped by our rule-pop-up but at least that way they've been warned that we'll delete post and member from the group.

message 59: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Thank you! :D

Authors are sometimes really boring regardless the rules. In another group they have their section but however they spam their book in every discussion because they don't read the rules or they don't care.

To be honest I have never noticed the rules box. But coming over from POBAB I just assumed the rules were similar.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

I've never noticed it either. But the I mainly use the phone ap and it doesn't show on there. The mods here are doing an excellent job because I barely notice any spam or annoying author posts !

That must by why Heather, I have been on my phone app when I have been out and about taking advantage of the limitless two months 3G I got with my Galaxy.

message 63: by Julia (last edited Oct 29, 2013 05:43AM) (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) Thanks SO much--and the original pop-up could state firmly that any self-promotion will lead to that person being removed from the group immediately (I've seen that in a few other groups).

Or as we say in the Coursera classes, "Don't feed the trolls" :-)

I really appreciate your attention to this.

I love "Don't feed the trolls"!!!!!

message 65: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments Can I suggest that you add to the group rules that only moderators can post on the 'moderators only' thread. Recently there have been some other people posting there, I think.

message 66: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Concerning self-promotion, if I finish a book, I often post in the 'What have you just read?' thread, but I write a review for it in my book blog. Is it okay say that I've finished it, then link to my review?

I think that's fine, Holly. Self promotion mainly concerns authors constantly promoting their own work - we are happy for you to share your thoughts about books you have read!

message 68: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Gosh that's a relief. I often do that!

message 69: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Thanks a lot for getting back to me! I can now happily link in peace without a niggling thought in the back of my head! Thank you!

Is there a rule for promoting books of friends and family? My friend has just published an Ebook which I'm planning on reading soon and if I like it I would like to share with the group. Would this be ok? 2. I don't want to be a pain!

Leslie | 16369 comments Heather wrote: "Is there a rule for promoting books of friends and family? My friend has just published an Ebook which I'm planning on reading soon and if I like it I would like to share with the group. Would this..."

I think that if you read it and liked it, then talking about it, and/or recommending it, would be fine.

message 73: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I agree! If it is something you read and enjoyed you should be allowed to talk about it regardless whether you know the author or not.

message 74: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14362 comments Mod
That's right: a simple matter of good sense: if you like a book, written by a friend/relative/yourself even you can say it easily enough!

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I want to be honest about it, so you will know when I talk about the book! I'm very excited for him and can't wait to read the book so I hope I actually enjoy it!

message 77: by Bionic Jean (last edited Dec 23, 2013 03:43PM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I did notice the self-promoting post by "Patrick" earlier this evening, and wondered if he was a new member - someone who had just joined the group in order to do this. Now I see Leslie has deleted it (and mentioned it on the mods only thread.)

So my question is this: Would you have liked me (or anyone spotting it) to bring it to your attention, mods? I'm not really sure how "heavy" you all want the group to be about self-promoting.

Oh, maybe I shouldn't have named him. Please delete this if that's so.

message 78: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 14704 comments Mod
I had gotten the email Jean but never thought to check. Was he promoting his own work?

Leslie | 16369 comments Jean wrote: "I did notice the self-promoting post by "Patrick" earlier this evening, and wondered if he was a new member - someone who had just joined the group in order to do this. Now I see Leslie has deleted..."

I would say that if it hasn't been dealt with inside of 24 hours, then posting or messaging about a self-promotion or other inappropriate post would be in order.

message 80: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Yes, Alannah - I think in the guise of introducing himself. Of course in some groups this is OK, so I'm always hesitant as it could be a genuine mistake. But then maybe they should read the rules...

Thanks Leslie. In that case I'm sure one of you would pick it up by then!

The great thing about this group is that you are welcome to do it yourself if you want.

Yes do it Katy!
I'm a rwal fan of audiobooks myself - now that I'm "boxing" my three storied house I listening to even more audiobooks than usual. But also Leslie uses them a lit. Coyld be interesting to see what others think of it.
Probably I'd put it in "Book chat"

message 84: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I think it is a great idea too! Are you OK setting it up, or would you prefer one of us to do it?

message 87: by Pink (new)

Pink I know we have a couple of days to go, but I just wondered if we'll be having a 2014 'books read' section, where we can all make our own threads, like we've done this year. I know there's already one for our 2014 personal challenges, but the planned books don't always tally with those that actually get read!

I was assuming that we would... in fact, I will go set that up right now :)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) The "Group Rules" box keeps coming up for me again. Is this just me? If not, is it just temporary?

Hi Jean and Alannah - it's just a temporary thing - don't worry, it will be removed again shortly.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks, Shirley :)

Hi mods. Just to make sure you've noticed the self promotional posts by 'E' who seems to think we all need to read a book for black African history month (surprising as he/she is the author of one) and also been pretty nasty to Amber in a couple of posts.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, I see you have now, bit of cross posting I think ,when I wrote that it wasn't clear any of the threads had been seen, Please delete (on ap so can't myself).

Yes, I have just been chatting with Amber about this over in General Chit-chat. I flagged the most flagrant self-promotional post to GoodReads (just in case this person who just joined GoodReads is doing this in other groups).

I looked on their profile and they are doing it on a number of threads in different groups.

message 97: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh I hope that won't be necessary, Lynne!! I like your thread, even though you don't admire Dickens quite as much as I do!! (That might be difficult though! LOL)

I did pass on the thought to Jenny (the mod who happened to be online at the time) that it was even more inappropriate to put this on a personal thread though, when I spotted it on yours.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) And another variant on the spam now on "Alannah's book lists". Doubt very much whether Alannah wants it there!
